There seems to be some controversy surrounding the fee that 60 Minutes has offered the 14 y.o. boy arrested in Bali for buying pot.
If David Hicks wasn't able to keep the payment he received for his book after 6 years of torture - then this kid certainly doesn't deserve payment for an interview. It doesn't send much of a message out there to other teenagers who think they'll get away with something similar and then get rewarded for their crimes.
Gillard has to step in and seize the money. It makes a mockery out of the law.
THE family of the 14-year-old boy on drug charges in Bali has sealed a six-figure deal with Nine Entertainment to tell the story of his arrest and trial.
Sources told The Sun-Herald last night that the deal, worth between $200,000 and $300,000, includes coverage across 60 Minutes, Nine News, and Nine Entertainment's ACP magazines. Nine's managing director, Jeffrey Browne, finalised the deal and it was signed off by the chief executive, David Gyngell. A source confirmed a 60 Minutes team may fly to Bali on Wednesday to film some colour for an interview with the boy and his family – in anticipation that he will be released on Friday.
The celebrity publicist Grant Vandenberg managed the deal, that was signed on Thursday.

I wonder if our proceeds of crime laws might be applied here.

What crime has the family of the boy committed Mantra?

Most people are guilty of lacking moral conviction at some stage in the adult life and have no problem with this. Rather they build elaborate reasons to justify their lack of morality in that given circumstance. Why should this be different?

If anyone is able to believe Ray Martin, it is incorrect that 60 Minutes have offered a six figure amount to whoever for the story. There would be a myriad of ways around the proceeds of crime legislation, I am sure.

Whatever. Surely parents tell kids they should NOT smoke dope? Especially not on holiday in Bali. LOL Why do people think they are the only ones that can avoid conviction? Bali says NO DRUGS ........ lucky if you can smoke a ciggie there. Your kid disobeyed the LAW in another country. Sorry. The Government doesn't owe you a cent and selling your soul to Commercial TV is not on either. Your kid's future is SHOT.
I think chucking the kid in jail might make him think that smoking is BAD. However, he could become a LEGEND when/if he does get back to Boganville.

Newsflash - what this kid did is illegal in both our countries. All that differs is the severity of the punishment.

It's a strong possibility that he will be very popular when he returns - but not to Boganville Neferti. His parents are quite wealthy, but they've had to spend tens of thousands of dollars on legal bills (and possibly bribes) so they need to recoup their investment - which is obviously going to pay them excellent dividends.

To be brittle (who cares?) whether his parents have money or not? The kid is obviously a horror. Does this 14 year old, pot smoker, have siblings? Did your 14 year olds get into pot?
