Cattle industry concedes live export suspension has improved animal welfare
The Cattle Council acknowledges that the suspension of the live trade with Indonesia has improved animal welfare in abattoirs there.
Since the ban was lifted, 72,000 head have been shipped overseas for slaughter, with 17 supply chains now accredited in Indonesia.
Cattle Council president Greg Brown says the trade has recovered quickly and welfare has improved.
"I think it has been the catalyst for cattle to be treated differently," he said.
"I don't think there's any doubt about that.
"I guess it was a pretty hard way to go.
"But I guess the upshot is, these cattle are going to be treated more humanely, there's no doubt about that."

This Labor govt hitting all the right notes!
Feedlots suck mightily, BTW. Grass fed cattle slaughtered close to the farm they were raised on are both healthier and the meat tastes much better. Cattle are not meant to eat grain!

Wait for the carbon tax propaganda...
If there are floods, they weren't so severe because you paid your money
If there are fires, they weren't so severe because you paid your money
If there are (insert some kind of environmental catastrophe)you paid your money
Notice the leftard trend....

ABC Rural, not a hotbed of socialism I would have thought?
Nah, a few weeks suspension shouldn't harm any well-run business. A lot of pastoralists were supportive.
I eat meat and I do know where it comes from, but that 4Corners footage turned my stomach.
Mind you, I am against live exports. Slaughter the beasts here, ship the chilled caracases. And fuck the Muslim superstitions!

Right. Well Cattle Council president Greg Brown is hardly going to say "It's pretty much still a fucking bloodbath over there. Not much has changed. In fact I think the cattle are now in more agony than ever." now is he?

I couldn't say either way. All I know is that Cattle Council president Greg Brown saying "Hey guys everything is cool in Indonesia now. These are not the droids you're looking for." is a complete non-story.

You're an idiot if you think that Monk. The government should have suspended the live trade until such time that all the foreign abattoirs had been checked out. Were they even checked out? I doubt it - there wouldn't have been any time to do so.
Live Corp should have got their act together after the Arab sheep debacle - but they didn't bother. Live exports should be stopped altogether and those who believe all these businesses will suffer should remember that when the trade started up, thousands of Australian abattoir workers lost their livelihoods.
There is no reason why we can't do the culling here - but the live trade is a monopoly now and the government is too lazy to rein them in.
If the government had any guts - they would have done what the majority of people wanted -stopped the trade permanently.
