I keep hearing here about how BER was a mistake. Now, I do not suggest I know all the ins and outs, but as I drive around the Sunshine Coast, passing Schools, I see magnificent and significant structures constructed under BER which are obviously a major and very useful asset for the School and the Community.

I don't get the criticism.

We’ve seen buildings overpriced by hundreds of thousands of dollars. We’ve seen exorbitant administration and management fees. We’ve seen pot plants costing 23 thousand dollars. We’ve seen a tiny school charged $77,000 for "design documentation, field data and site management" even though they didn't get a new building. All of this is your money. It was borrowed from China on your behalf, by the current Labor regime, and you and your children will be paying it back at interest.

THE levels of waste being uncovered as part of the Rudd government's Building the Education Revolution are continuing to come to light with a report in The Australian showing school canteens built by the Catholic school system under the controversial $16.2 billion program, are up to five times cheaper than those delivered by the government.

Geraldton's St Lawrence Primary School at Bluff Point has developed a 10m x 7.5 m canteen for $4043 per square metre.

By comparison, the governments "unusable" small NSW canteens, measuring 8.47m x 3.1 m, costs $23,000 per square metre.

ALMOST $2 billion has been wasted under the schools stimulus program in the eastern states.

Public schools were forced to vastly overpay for buildings compared with non-government schools.

The revelation has led to calls for broader investigations into the long-term problems of state governments overpaying for school buildings, beyond the Building the Education Revolution program.

Data published by the BER taskforce shows public schools in the three biggest states are paying on average between 26 per cent and a massive 54 per cent more for school buildings than Catholic schools in each state.

In NSW, public schools are paying 38 per cent more for buildings, despite the taskforce finding no "significant differences" in quality between buildings delivered to public schools and non-government schools.

According to the interim report, released on Friday, NSW public schools are being charged an average of $3900 per square metre for BER buildings, compared with $2823 for Catholic schools.
