TEAR gas was used to subdue angry asylum seekers at Christmas Island amid rioting and mass breakouts of immigration detainees.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen revealed the dramatic tactic had been used as tensions boiled over at the island's detention centre early this morning.

"Damage was done to facilities including fencing, some accommodation and door locks," Mr Bowen said.

"At 3.37am this morning the Australian Federal Police determined that it was necessary to use tear gas to quell this protest."

Of course the irony here is, the socialist-left and our MSM have portrayed Libyas fallen government as being inhumane for using tear-gas on it's rebellious people (the UN encouraged them to overthrow their government btw, Obama has even offered them military weapons).
At least Libyas rebels have somewhere to run if they want out of this protest, can escape the tear-gas, but how far can our refugees on Christmas island run behind their rabbit proof fence?

Assuming current Xmas Is detainees are Afgan or Iraqi, or mixture of, and how just about every time we get involved in other's wars/invasions/occupations/police actions we wind up with a heap of ran-aways, culpability for this lot lies with Howard's crew, regardless of whatever anti-people smuggling policies adopted/implemented and later supposedly relaxed by Rudd/Gillard's mob.
