Authorities have published a startling photograph of a live seal pup stuck in a bin, as they call for public help to find those responsible for placing it there. The animal was found at the back of an RSL in Portland on Victoria’s southwest coast, close to the border with South Australia.
Portland is known for its abundant marine life, including whales, dolphins and Australian fur seals. It even has a resident elephant seal named Sammy, who makes regular appearances in the town.
The picture of the seal has sparked an uproar on social media after it was shared by the state's environment department. “OMG, seriously?” one person wrote. "What lowlife would separate a seal pup from its mother and leave it in a bin?” another asked.

What is it with Victorians? Bobby?
This is not the first time it's happened. Last year this happened ...
What's wrong with people? Poor HARMLESS little baby seals. Did they ever find them? Or even look? Things like this just break my heart.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-10-01/ ... /104416402Victoria's Conservation Regulator said a member of the public first spotted the baby seal unharmed on Lake Bunga Beach early one morning in September.
Manager of the Gippsland branch, Cal Heppell, said the seal's condition had changed dramatically when the witness returned that evening.
"The member of the public went back around 6.00pm and the seal was observed to have some facial injuries," Mr Heppell said.
"It was then assessed by a vet and was subsequently euthanased because of severe injuries sustained to its spine and ribs."
The witness told authorities they saw human and dog footprints at the scene, as well as a large stick surrounding the baby seal.

Offenders face a maximum penalty of $3,951 under the Wildlife Act, and up to $49,397 or 12 months in prison under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
$3,951? Animal cruelty penalties are just NOT enough. It's a joke.

Humans are the only species that kill purely for enjoyment, or the concept of killing for the sake of killing.
