Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai is the latest high-profile figure to disappear. She is unlikely to be the last.
Concerns are growing for the athlete, who has not been seen since she released a statement claiming she had been sexually assaulted.
Who is Peng Shuai?
Peng Shuai, 35, is one of China’s most recognisable sporting stars. The former tennis doubles World No 1, she also reached No 14 in the singles rankings, and won two women’s doubles grand slams at Wimbledon in 2013 and the 2014 French Open. She also competed in multiple Olympics.
Peng is now the subject of international speculation and concern after she posted sexual assault allegations against a powerful former government official earlier this month, and hasn’t been seen since.
What happened?
On 2 November Peng posted a lengthy statement to Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social media platform, in which she accused the country’s former vice-premier, Zhang Gaoli, of sexually assaulting her.
Peng said she and Zhang, now 75, had for several years had an on-off extramarital “relationship”. Peng said Zhang had stopped contacting her after he rose in the ranks of the Communist party, but about three years ago invited her to play tennis with him and his wife and then sexually assaulted her in his house.
In her Weibo post, Peng said she couldn’t produce any evidence of her accusation but was determined to voice them. “Like an egg hitting a rock, or a moth to the flame, courting self-destruction, I’ll tell the truth about you,” she wrote.
The accusation is the most significant of China’s #MeToo movement, which has struggled to gain traction in the face of strict censorship, an opaque justice system, and social and political hostility. No public accusation has ever been levelled against a senior official of the Chinese Communist party before, let alone one as high-ranking as Zhang.

I bet she's in a re-education camp learning
that communist party officials don't sexually assault or rape women.

Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai has denied making an accusation of sexual assault, in her first media interview since alleging a top Chinese leader had coerced her to have sex.
Ms Peng sparked global concern when she disappeared from public view after posting the allegations online.
She has now said there had been "a lot of misunderstandings" about the post.
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) said it was still concerned that she was being censored by the state.
In the video interview with Lianhe Zaobao, a Singaporean Chinese-language newspaper, Ms Peng explained: "I have never said or written that anyone sexually assaulted me. This point must be emphasised very clearly."
However in her original note, which was posted on the Chinese social media platform Weibo in November, she accused former Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli of forcing her to have sex with him.
Ms Peng also told Lianhe Zaobao that she was not under surveillance, saying: "Why would anyone monitor [me?] always been very free."

Sure she's free
Nothing fishy or unexpected about this after her 're-education' program.

Will be interesting to see if she participates in any tournaments out of China,
although the CCP still have control of her family so she will keep her mouth shut no doubt!
that country really is the arsehole of the world.

This is normal procedure from the Chinese cartel.
For the Chinese under the cartel, truth doesn't matter; only the official decree.
