All the stars from the Indiana Jones movies: Where are they now?
It’s been 40 years since Steven Spielberg’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark first whipped audiences into a frenzy and introduced the world to the man with the hat.
The rip-roaring adventure starred Harrison Ford who was at the time hot off his role as Han Solo in Star Wars. In Raiders, he played lead character Indiana Jones, an archaeologist with a penchant for fedoras, whips and rare antiquities of great power.
This love letter to the matinee adventures of the 1930s spawned three sequels and a television spin-off. The fifth instalment of the franchise has just started filming in the UK.
We know Harrison Ford has kept himself busy over the intervening years, but here we look into the careers of the rest of the cast
Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood
Raiders Of The Lost Ark was Karen Allen’s big break. She had made her debut in 1978 in the John Landis directed National Lampoon’s Animal House, but it was her role as Indy’s feisty companion that brought her to the masses.
Since then, she starred opposite Jeff Bridges in John Carpenter’s Starman and revisited Marion in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
Most recently she appeared with Amanda Seyfried in the Netflix film Things Heard & Seen.
John Rhys-Davies as Sallah
The prolific actor has been unstoppable since his likeable performance as Indy’s friend Sallah in Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
An appearance in a Bond film (The Living Daylights) followed later as well as regular roles in high-profile shows like Sliders and historical dramas including War And Remembrance and Great Expectations.
And then a call from Peter Jackson changed everything. Rhys-Davies was packing his bags for an epic trip to New Zealand for his role as the axe-wielding dwarf Gimli in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
He is still constantly working today with 272 credits to his name.
Alfred Molina as Satipo
His film debut may have been cut short, quite literally, as Indy’s ill-fated and deceitful assistant Satipo in the iconic opening of Raiders Of The Lost Ark but Molina has built up a stunning body of work since he helped the archaeologist steal the golden idol from a booby-trapped Peruvian temple.
From Boogie Nights and Magnolia to Species and The Da Vinci Code, Molina has become a familiar face to arthouse crowds and blockbuster audiences alike.
Soon he will revisit one of his most famous roles, Doc Ock, in the forthcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Ronald Lacey as Toht
Odds on, if you think of cinematic Nazis, you will picture Toht from Raiders Of The Lost Ark. As played by Ronald Lacey, the sinister Gestapo agent with a penchant for tortuous coat hangers and melted skin is one of the standouts in the film. Played for creepy laughs, Toht is the character that Lacey, who passed away aged just 55, will be best remembered for, despite an illustrious career on the British stage.
Paul Freeman as Belloq
The early ’80s were kind to Paul Freeman. Not only did the then television actor land a role as Indy’s arch-nemesis Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark, he also appeared in the classic British gangster thriller The Long Good Friday and the Christopher Walken starring action film The Dogs Of War.
Since that artistically fertile period, Freeman has remained a prolific and versatile performer throughout a career that also included two episodes of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and a role in Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz.
He is still working today at the age of 78.
Kate Capshaw as Willie Scott
After Kate Capshaw’s role in Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom as shrill chanteuse Willie Scott thrust her into the limelight, she won a series of high-profile roles including Best Defence opposite Eddie Murphy and Dudley Moore and Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid along with starring roles in SpaceCamp and Ridley Scott’s Black Rain.
She retired from acting in 2002.
She is married to Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg who she met on the Temple Of Doom set and between them they have seven children.
Ke Huy Quan as Short Round
Best known as Indy’s pint-sized sidekick in Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom and the accident-prone inventor Data in The Goonies, Quan was born in Saigon, South Vietnam.
Since his Spielberg sanctioned career springboard, he has only made a few television movie appearances until his last appearance in Second Time Around in 2002.
He was lured back in front of the camera in the faux Goonies treasure hunting Hawaiian adventure Finding ’Ohana in 2021.
Sean Connery as Professor Henry Jones
Who better to play Indiana Jones’ father than James Bond himself, Sir Sean Connery? The irascible Scottish actor, who passed away in 2020, officially retired from acting in 2006.
He famously said no to playing Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings, Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films and The Architect in The Matrix trilogy.
His last film was The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003.
Alison Doody as Else
After making her debut as Jenny Flex opposite the ever-arching eyebrows of Roger Moore in A View To A Kill, Irish actor Alison Doody appeared in A Prayer For The Dying opposite Mickey Rourke and Bob Hoskins before taking on both Dr Jones Junior and Senior in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
Since then, she has had an on/off career including a decade away from the big screen. Her biggest credits since have been in baseball sequel Major League II and a couple of episodes of the TV miniseries King Solomon’s Mines.
Denholm Elliott as Marcus Brody
The beloved English actor sadly passed away in 1992. In a career that began in 1947, his role of museum curator and Jones’s loyal friend Marcus Brody is one of his most cherished. Especially in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade where he joins Indy on his quest with often hilarious results.
One of his final performances was opposite Nicole Kidman in the Aussie miniseries Bangkok Hilton in 1989.
