Four hurt in Dunedin stabbing attack

Witnesses at the scene of a multiple stabbing at a Countdown supermarket in Dunedin say there was "chaos" as the attack unfolded.

Three people have been taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition

and one in a moderate condition after the 2.35pm incident.

A man, who had blood on him, has been arrested and was walked to the Dunedin Central Police Station, next door to the supermarket.

A couple, who asked not to be named, were shopping in the aisle next to the pharmacy department, where the incident took place.

"We just heard a scream and thought someone must've fallen, but it got louder and louder and more people were screaming," the woman said.

"I saw one red hand among the people; a bloody hand, and everybody started running towards the exits."

The man said brave members of the public had pinned down the stabber but they believed he had been able to wrestle his way free before police arrived.

One woman who was shopping a couple of aisles over, said she was also alerted to the incident by the high-pitched yelling.

"I heard screaming and I thought it was just teenagers, but then I heard someone yell 'he's got a knife'."

Another woman who was entering the supermarket at the time said she was confronted by two hysterical girls.

Another bystander grabbed them, thinking they were shoplifters but they were followed by a stampede of shoppers.

"It was chaos," she said. "Unbelievable."

Staff members were congregated outside the supermarket, some visibly shaking.

Police and multiple ambulances descended on the Cumberland St Countdown after the multiple-stabbing.

Don't know if it's a terrorist attack but he looks like a grub from what you can see of him though.

OK - he's got long hair and it looks like white skin:

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said police had assured her that the attack did not appear to be terror-related.

Witnesses told local media a man carrying two knives had stabbed staff, as well as bystanders who tried to stop him and pin him down.

People reported a chaotic scene as people began screaming and running toward the store exits.

Health authorities said three of the wounded individuals had been admitted to intensive care, with one admitted to a general ward and the other discharged.

Dunedin: A man who allegedly went on a stabbing rampage with two knives at a Dunedin supermarket on Monday has been charged with attempting to murder four people.

The 42-year-old was initially scheduled to appear in Dunedin District Court on Tuesday morning, but it’s believed the hearing has been moved to 2.15pm.

Court documents show the man has been charged with attempting to murder four people, two men and two women.

The documents say he is of no fixed abode. They do not list his occupation.

As the assailant was stabbing a man, a person armed with a chair is understood to have helped stop the assault – and a person at the scene said his action may have “saved his life”.

A witness said the attacker called out “witches, witches” when he was held by people on the ground, and said the man had been using small knives.

The man who allegedly went on a stabbing rampage in a Dunedin supermarket will keep his identity under wraps until next month.

The 42-year-old appeared in the Dunedin District Court this afternoon facing four charges of attempted murder
after allegedly attacking two staff members and a married couple at the Cumberland St Countdown in the central city yesterday.

Corrections officer, Countdown staff injured

Emergency services vehicles swiftly flooded the scene and the victims were rushed to the nearby hospital where they remained today.

Three were in a serious but stable state, while one was in a moderate condition.

The defendant, who was also briefly hospitalised before being discharged last night, appeared in the dock wearing a white cover-all garment, bare-footed with a white plaster on his right forearm.

He stood with his head bowed in the dock only looking up when the judge addressed him.

Counsel John Westgate entered no plea on behalf of his client and asked for name suppression to be granted until the next appearance before the High Court in June.

Judge Peter Rollo granted the order and
remanded the man in custody until that date.

He confirmed there was no formal mental-health assessment sought.

"No fixed abode". He looked grubby and had torn clothing so I'm not surprised that he's apparently homeless. Shutting down the institutions decades ago did nothing to help these people. If anything it's made their lives, and those around them, more of a nightmare.

Maybe he would have been better off in an asylum?

I think they closed down the lunatic asylums in NZ too.
The lunatics are out on the street and armed with knives.
