China v Australia

Post by Black Orchid » Tue Dec 15, 2020 7:09 pm

This deserves its own topic. So far China has banned Aussie beef, seafood, wine, barley and timber. Now they are in breach of WTO rules and our free trade agreement by purportedly accepting coal again from every country except Australia.
Scott Morrison is demanding clarity on reports China has banned Australian coal.

The prime minister said Chinese state-owned media reports had not yet been confirmed by the government in Beijing.

“Until we are in a position to have that clarified then we can only treat this as media speculation,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

“If that were the case, then that would obviously be in breach of WTO rules, it would be obviously in breach of our free trade agreement, and so we would hope that is certainly not the case.”

Morrison said a Chinese ban on Australian coal would be a lose-lose for both countries.
However, he noted India and Japan were also large buyers of Australian coal, meaning the industry had a “diverse customer base”.

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham is deeply troubled by the reports.

Dozens of ships carrying Australian coal have been stranded off the coast of China for months due to supposed environmental problems.

But overnight, a Chinese state-owned media outlet reported power plants had been directed to stop taking Australian coal.

“We see these reports and obviously are deeply troubled by them,” Birmingham said.

“They, if true, would indicate discriminatory trade practices being deployed by Chinese authorities and we would urge them to rule that out swiftly.”

It’s the latest crackdown by China on Australian goods, which has so far hit consumables including beef, wine, barley and seafood, plus timber.

Birmingham said the Australian government was close to finalising a complaint to the World Trade Organisation over Chinese tariffs imposed on barley.

“We are well prepared in terms of the analysis we have undertaken to mount that case,” he said.

We should reclaim all Chinese holdings in Australian assets and send them packing.

Community leaders in North Queensland fear China's plan to build a fish processing facility on their doorstep will jeopardise border security and the commercial fishing sector.

China's Ministry of Commerce has announced that Fujian Zhonghong Fishery Company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Papua New Guinea Government to build a $204 million "comprehensive multi-functional fishery industrial park" on the island of Daru under its Belt and Road Initiative.

Daru is one of the few Torres Strait Islands that are governed by Papua New Guinea rather than Australia.

Former PNG government adviser Jeffrey Wall said it was a lot of money to spend in a small community not known for commercial fish stocks.

"We should be absolutely alarmed not only because it is strategically located close to Australia, but there is potential for conflict in the Torres Strait," he said.

"It's the town nearest to Australia and it's only several kilometres from some of our islands in the Torres Strait.
"It's an area that's porous and therefore would be open to drug smuggling and people trafficking, which has been happening — it's a very vulnerable spot."

Mr Wall said he believed China had ulterior motives for the site.

"In my view, what they're going to do, first of all, is build a very large wharf. So when you build a very large wharf, what do you build? Somewhere where naval vessels can land," he said.

It is a view shared by Federal MP for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch, whose electorate encompasses the Torres Strait.

"Given that we are establishing with Papua New Guinea and America a naval presence on Manus Island, it worries me that there might be other motives for what the Chinese are doing there," Mr Entsch said.

I don't see this as an issue, but rather an opportunity. We can use the coal to smelt the ore and sell the iron at a premium.
I notice that Aussies are tot complaining about the glut of lobsters returned to our market... They have to put a limit on how many you can buy at Woolies.

Any thing that makes Australia more independent is a good thing.
I look forward to cheap beef too, now that China has found issue with it.
"But you will run your kunt mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."

We are in trouble.

I believe coal is/was our largest export.
Coal towns will be ghost towns.

I can't see China saying, 'Yes, you are right. We breached trade regulations. Sorry.'

I think iron ore is our biggest export and the WTO needs to stand up and put China in their place.

From what I have read China has doubled its coal deal with Russia.
They dont need our coal...
or anything else from Australia....
BUT...
Yansteel (a Chinese steel producing company) has recently been given approval to buy a 50%
share of the Western Australian mineral sands mine Thunderbird.
The buy in costing Yansteel $150 million...or around that figure, depending on
what you read....has been approved by the Foreign Investment Review Board...
The mine will extract zircon and titanium oxide to be exported to China
to produce ceramics and paint....
It appears that Australia will benefit by a billion dollars in taxes and royalties from the deal...
Over the life of the mine that is....
Oh....and apparently it will create 200 jobs.....
Sounds like a great deal to me....
Ironic isnt it....
China screws us...(maybe we started it by banning Huawei..calling for an investigation
into the conjob19 plandemic...etc etc....)
BUT we allow China to buy half the mine....
Who was it that said "never bite the hand that feeds you...."
Aaah well....
Australia is in a lose/lose situation with China....
Dont you just love and admire and respect our politicians.... :rofl :rofl :rofl
To discover those who rule over you, first discover those who you cannot criticize...Voltaire
Its coming...the rest of the world versus islam....or is it here already...

I'm damned sick of the politicians on both sides constantly selling out to China. It has to stop.

Correct me if I am wrong!
