Incidentally, my 89 Toyota Pick-Up was rear-ended by a current model Bimmer while stopped at a red-light. The BMW basically annihilated itself, while my truck would go on to get rear-ended again before being sold, all the while running perfectly fine.

So yeah, German engineers probably didn't account for what happens when the drivers are inverted in your comment.

My tundra has been in a frozen ditch more than a dozen times. Survived 3 collisions, and cleaned a light pole off. And still only needs basic maintenance at 230k km. Meanwhile my f150 died on its own several times before it even reached 100k km...

Other great German inventions:
$400 oil change because oil has to vacuumed out from the top of the engine. Porsche and Benz
Battery that must be registered with the vehicles computer. BMW
Lug bolts that frequently shear off when replacing a tire. Also you get to hold the tire up with one hand and thread the bolt I with the other. BMW Audi VW, etc
Ball joints that are integrated with the control arm so a $50 worn out part is sold with a $300 control arm just for shits-n-giggles. Audi
“Lifetime” differentials and transmission with no drain hold to replace fluid since you’re going to need a new one at 70K miles anyway. BMW

Colin Johnson you’re right , I was referring to German built autos during the same period as the 85 Toyota trucks. Japanese vehicles will outlast domestic and European models hands down

The bumper on any body on frame truck is way more solid than any modern car. There are no crumple zones in the rear of a truck. I have found that Toyotas are overdesigned and more dependable. I do have a Ford truck with 170k km and no problems. It has been wrecked and repaired several times and always minor damage.
