Fears nearly 500 million animals killed in Aussie fires

Post by Black Orchid » Tue Dec 31, 2019 11:24 am

Around 480 million animals are feared to have died in the bushfires sweeping Australia, including nearly a third of the koalas in New South Wales's main habitat.

Ecologists at the University of Sydney estimate around 480 million mammals, birds and reptiles have been killed, directly or indirectly, by the devastating blazes since they began in September, The Times reported.

This includes almost 8,000 koalas, which are believed to have burnt to death on the state’s mid-north coast.

The region, which lies around 240 miles north of Sydney, is home to the largest number of Australia’s koalas, with a population of up to 28,000.

Federal environment minister Sussan Ley told ABC "up to 30 per cent of the population in that region" may have been killed, because around 30 per cent of their habitat has been destroyed.

Nine people have died and hundreds of homes have been razed to the ground during the unprecedented bushfire season.

About four million hectares have been burnt in New South Wales alone.

Dedicated workers at the The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital reportedly treated 72 badly burnt animals on Christmas Day.

They were brought in after bushfires destroyed up to three quarters of their habitat, according to the clinical director Cheyne Flanagan.

Indeed. It's quite alarming that we're only at the end of December.. where I live, it stays relatively hot until April. I hope the Government learns from this catastrophe in future.

I wonder if the Governments will reverse the cuts they made to the RFS in NSW and Federally? :roll

That would be the logical thing to do.

The entire funding fiasco is a bloody disgrace...
The NSW government cuts funding, then scumo, after holidaying in Hawaii and returning simply
to save face after two firefighters were killed, comes out with a "deal" which pays firefighters
if they are volunteering for more than ten days.....
What a farce.....
What a disgrace....
All scumo is doing is attempting to get some votes out of the entire tragic summer...
Youre a disgrace scumo...and Glad Bags..(good name for the buzzard)….is just as bad.... :rofl
Why isnt the media highlighting the fact that funding was cut by the NSW grubberment...
Lets talk some more about the $300 million being spent on the new football stadium....
This country is being run by fkn morons...state..federal…and local grubberments are all as bad as one another...... :rofl

As most of the Australian MSM is owned by the Lovecraftian Horror who supports Scumo and Glad-bags 110% it is perhaps understandable why they have not spoken over much about the budget cuts. :roll

Have budget cuts actually been implemented?
The claim.

Adding to the chorus, on November 15, 2019, NSW Labor Leader Jodi McKay claimed:

"[The] government's budget papers show that Fire and Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service combined are facing a $40 million budget cut — a cut that will mean fewer people on the ground to fight fires and less budget to do it with".

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has rejected any suggestion of cuts, arguing her Government had "provided record funding to all of our frontline agencies in emergency services".

So, is $40 million being cut from the NSW firefighting budget? RMIT ABC Fact Check investigates.

The verdict.

Ms McKay's claim doesn't stack up.

Her office told Fact Check the $40 million figure relied on numbers from the latest June budget.

However, Ms McKay has compared initial estimates for the coming financial year, 2019-20, with revised estimates for the last. These numbers are not a like-for-like comparison, and the budget papers make clear the initial estimates are subject to change.

Her comparison ignores the fact that the revised 2018-19 estimates include more than $40 million in retrospective reimbursements for spending on natural disasters.

By contrast, the initial 2019-20 estimates do not include top-ups for disaster spending, which the fire agencies are almost certain to receive.

Recurrent funding was also particularly high in 2018-19 due to a change in workers compensation arrangements.

The change muddies the comparison with spending in this year, which may be lower due to a drop in insurance costs.

Importantly, lower spending on workers compensation would not affect the firefighting agencies' ability to combat bushfires.

Experts consulted by Fact Check said budget outcomes inevitably varied from the initial estimates, meaning it was too early to say if funding had been cut.
From Brian's beloved ABC ... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-05/ ... s/11747396

"Facing cuts" seems to be just speculation by the opposition and as far as I can tell no cuts have actually been made. After this fire season I very much doubt any cuts will be made.

so many of the fires have been deliberately lit......this is where we need to come down heavy on
the offenders.....how low can you go?....nothing seem to deter them... so it has to be jail...

then we have to come u with better ways to fight fires..

one man ...one hose ......isnt good enough they did that 100 years ago..

they have put a man on the moon since then,,,, how many firies have we lost this far and its only been a month of the season gone

spend more money on new ways to deal with these emergencies.....

the fires on the coast have been raging for weeks... and now surprise surprise they have belted the townships... who would have thought that could happen????????????

it almost humorous when they tell people to evacuate yeah like where>>> which roads are open...

makes sense to some!
