‘Sold a dud’: Aussies abandon $2k waste of money

Australians are dumping this product in droves as they begin to realise it’s not worth the $2000 they are spending every year.

Young Australians are increasingly rejecting private health insurance, questioning whether it’s actually value for money.

New figures show 65,000 people abandoned their hospital treatment membership in 2018 — the biggest 12-month fall in 15 years.

Those aged 25 to 29 had the steepest drops with 33,975 young Australians getting rid of their insurance, the most of any age group, representing a 6.9 per cent decline.

The figures come as a working paper from the Grattan Institute suggested the private health insurance industry feared it was in a “death spiral” and politicians should rethink whether taxpayers should continue to subsidise the industry.

It noted Australians were increasingly dissatisfied with private health insurance and premiums were rising much faster than wages or inflation.

AMA president Tony Bartone acknowledged people wouldn’t be getting rid of private health insurance if it was good value for money.

“Australians are very clever. They certainly realise when they are being sold a dud and that’s why they’re dropping out,” he told the National Press Club this month.

The Grattan paper noted insurance premiums had increased by 30 per cent since 2010/11 compared with an 8 per cent real increase in wages.

Health Insurance is a rip off due to the exorbitant fees
from medical professionals.
They are blackmailing the people of Australia -
they live like kings.

It's ridiculous what you have to pay in health care in comparison to what you get back.

Yes - I only have basic cover and if I didn't, I'd have to pay more tax.
Otherwise I wouldn't have it.
There is also an excess fee of $500 and it doesn't cover 1001 things.

I had extosies done (swimmers ear) to both ears
$16,000.00 classed as cosmetic surgery even though I was having far infections every month.
No covered.
My daughter had an underbite that was causing massive headache and pain.
$8,000.00 classed as orthodontics
Not covered
My sinuses were damaged from many years of martial arts, requiring surgery.
$8500.00 again classed as cosmetic surgery
Not covered
My wife required new knees, the joints were bone to bone.
They didn't like the more advanced knee replacements, because they were more expensive. The new ones were better, lasted longer and had a much better recovery.
They woukd only pay for the most basic of primitive replacement knees.
That little exercise cost me $25,000.00

I pay $7,000.00 a year in premiums, will soon be less when my daughter gets her own.
It's a total rip off.

THANKS TO THE GRUBBERMENT
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

I cant think of anything that hasnt gone up in 9 years...

the latest for me is a script I have been getting filled for about 10 years where I get two pkts for the price of one..

I am now told I can only get one pkt and if I want two I have to pay for two

the point is I take these pills one in the morning one at night they are heart pills but only come in a pck of 30... hence the two pks..

now I am told I need to go back every 15 days and get the second box as well as pay for it...it will also mean renewing the script every 3 months instead of 6months...this is meant to be saving money....

I was a bit gobsmacked when first informed at the chemist.....but since then can only shake my head..as it will mean I will be on the free script list longer than normal....as I will reach the 200 mark a lot earlier..

makes sense to some.
