Bees

Post by BigP » Fri Jan 18, 2019 6:04 pm

I have to head up Manly tomorrow To the brother in laws place , I gave is wife a beehive and honey super a week and a half back, she is getting a little nerves, she has found a few dead bees outside the hive, which is not unusual when you have shipped them a good distance, One hive has a few hundred dead bees, What happens when they ship 1000 hives and are not as sensitive as I was,I will head up tomorrow and open the hive check out tthe honey situation , maybe put a feeder on top if the arent going up into the honey super,

Just to qualify this rant, I have a small commercial apiary

They were looking really good, The hive was a Nuc that I put into a full brood box the day before I took it up, It had a new queen that I had grafted a few weeks before , I found her and she looked great and laying well , going to be a strong hive next spring and should produce a lot of honey

Congrats. Well done.

I saw 4 bees on our Evolvulus flowers in a 3 M area this morning. They were buzzing and going from flower to flower.
There would have been many more. We planted that whole yard for butterflies. There are all sorts of insects and life in there,

A term used to describe the process of removing a three day old grub from a worker cell and placing it into a plastic queen cup, you then place these into a strong queenless hive and the workers will produce new queens from them

Sounds complicated. So the grafted queen doesn't end up being the boss lady? The workers make more? So who then decides who the real queen will be? The workers? Or do the queens fight for supremacy?

If all the queen cells were left in the queen building hive to hatch, the first one out would kill all the remaining queens
