A FEMALE ranger has been taken by a crocodile infront of horrified onlookers in a remote region of the Northern Territory.

The woman was attacked while on the job at 10am today near the community of Gangan, about 206km south west of Yirrkala in Arnhem Land. She has not been seen since. News.com.au understands police are enroute via dirt roads and boat to the area but were at least a few hours away mid-afternoon Friday.

The Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation, which runs the Yirralka Rangers program, first reported the attack to authorities, and has since closed its office.

“NT WorkSafe has been notified that a female Aboriginal Ranger has been taken by a crocodile,” a statement issued by the government organisation read.

NT WorkSafe has commenced an investigation into the incident after receiving reports of the attack from multiple witnesses.

“We’re hoping this all ends well...(there’s) no body...it hasn’t been confirmed as a fatality,” NT WorkSafe spokesman Peter Chan told news.com.au.

A NT Police spokeswoman told news.com.au no further information was yet available.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have not been confirmed due to the remoteness of the location and difficulty relaying information.

Gangan is a small community located about 206km south west of Yirrkala in the Northern Territory.
CareFlight, which is usually tasked to assist with medical situations in remote locations, did not attend the site. A CareFlight spokeswoman said the organisation had been stood down from responding as information supplied to them indicated the person was missing.

A recent study by researchers at the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre, Royal Darwin Hospital and Menzies School of Health into water-related deaths in the region, found deaths from crocodile attacks have increased dramatically since culling ended in 1971.

According to the study, 14 people were killed by crocs from 2005 to 2014, compared to 10 deaths in the 33 years to 2004. The latest confirmed death form a crocodile attack in the NT took place in January last year. A 47-year-old man from Gunbalanya was taken by a crocodile and killed while attempting to cross Cahills Crossing.

The NT government supports regulated trophy hunting in collaboration with Indigenous groups but the notion has long been met with staunch opposition from the federal government.
