Thermal boredom

Bosses are being encouraged to turn off air conditioning and open windows to stop workers suffering from "thermal boredom".

The conference in Tasmania is examining ways to make buildings healthier. Scott Drake from the University of Melbourne has been studying office buildings that can switch between air conditioning and natural ventilation. He says people appear to work better if they can get fresh air.

I'm a big fan of natural air conditioning. But now I'm stuck in an office where people freak out if you open a window and they insist on having it freezing cold.

I think there is something to this, seriously.

I worked in a climate controlled building and get tired, when I get out in the fresh air regardless of the weather the blood starts pumping again.

The only solution is open windows or booze in the stairwells.

Keeping large buildings at a constant temperature is a real art form.

I work directly with building management and what they have to do to keep this titanic of a building at something near a constant temperature is amazing. It is all computerized with a site map that tells you the varying temps all over the building, and then there are these plant rooms on every floor literally like giant lungs moving air through the building. There are giant chillers on the roof, five in our building which need constant attention from an air conditioning engineer.

There is really more to it than you would ever imagine.

Also there is the psychological factor, people go out to lunch on a hot day come back and complain about the air conditioning, they do not realize they have raised their own body temperate by walking in the sun, and you can not explain it to them (government workers!) so you lie and tell them you have just turned up the air around them and they should feel it in about 10 minutes, you don’t, you just tell them that, and then they thank you to minutes latter as their body temp cools down.

I think we keep the aircon people in business. In summer it's very hot where I work and where the public are, on a hot day. On the 10th floor they're wearing gloves and scarves all summer.
