Re: Spam and Scam Alerts
Last night I got a call to my mobile.
Call 1
Ring - look and see it is a UK number
Me: Answer with my name (as I do)
Caller: Hello (in Arabic) [No-one from the UK does this]
Me: Respond in Arabic (one of the 10 words I know)
Caller: I am ringing from UK could you tell me the number you have on your screen for me
Me: What?
Call dropped
Call 2
Ring: UK number
Answer - Hello
Caller: I am from UK working for an international telco and we are doing tests
Me: OK, what do you want
Caller: Can you tell me the number on your screen, we are testing
Me: Who are you and what company are you from?
Caller: An international telco in the UK, can you see the number is from the UK, can you tell me the number I am calling from
Me: Yes (saying this was a mistake I have read)
Caller: Can you tell me the number as part of our tests
Me: NO, I am not going to help you, no telco will do this
Caller: Ok - hung up.
Thinking about this and analyzing the situation and my conclusion.
1. Each call was a different number, how would that work
2. he wanted me to read out the telephone number
3. I recalled hearing of a scam where they ask you to read out numbers so they get a voice print/recording of you saying each number
4. They then use this number with banks ...etc where they have devices that will allow you to enter your banking ID or pin number using voice.
5. This is what they were after................. smart buggers
If it feels wrong, it is, hang up. Companies do not ring random people to do tests. Also they know the number they are ringing from.
Risk: These guys must have some personal data on me, maybe my number and name. Now they have a voice print of me saying Yes and No..

Re: Spam and Scam Alerts
Ooops .... that Yes/No alert has been around for ages. It has something to do with Banking and the person owning the account activating it with a "yes/No" reply.
There is an Aussie Government Scam Watch ... not sure how up to date it is though.
