Cockroaches can breed for generations without males, study finds

Female cockroaches can reproduce healthily for years without ever meeting a member of the opposite sex, a Japanese study has found.

Researchers from Hokkaido University isolated 15 virgin female cockroaches in 2013. Within three years, the female-only colony had bred five generations and only showed small signs of slowing down.

While this phenomenon is not unheard of in the insect world, etymology expert David Merritt from the University of Queensland's Faculty of Science said the fact the cockroaches could breed for so long was unusual.

"Many insects can reproduce parthenogenetically, meaning females don't need to mate to produce offspring, but usually they go extinct," Dr Merritt told the ABC.

"But [this study] kept the cockroaches for many generations.

Apparently they can live for up to 10 days without a head too.

The Sydney "cockies" are HUGE. Much larger and darker than the Canberran ones are.

I have to have pest control come out quarterly to spray my house. Luckily I don't have a problem with the small cockroaches (German) that live and breed indoors but the big ones that prefer outside and only come in to visit. I have heard the exterminator call them "Palmetto Bugs" which is just a pretty word for something very ugly:



My neighbor just had a old and large oak tree that hung over my house cut down. I know that these "Palmetto Bugs" used to live in this tree, drop down on my roof and make their way in. Am hoping that now the tree is gone the roaches will be gone as well ...
