The Checkout
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/thecheckout/
They give good information that everyone should know in our consumerist society.
I especially liked the piece about "lowest prices, guaranteed"... where you can get the same exact product elsewhere, cheaper, but because that particular colour was exclusive to the one chain of shops (and hence it had it's own product code), they wouldn't match the price (or refund if you've already bought).
Sneaky bastards.

Re: The Checkout
I buy what I want, when I want and do NOT listen to advertising and certainly don't bother with prices. I have no time to drive around looking for the cheapest prices and really don't care to.boxy wrote:http://www.abc.net.au/tv/thecheckout/

If you have to count every penny you spend at the supermarket, then you are doing something wrong and it is probably buying other crap that the kids want.

So you have to match the specs rather than the colour...bew fucking hew.
It's not the retailers or the wholesalers problem to pander to the idiots who can't figure out the minute difference between an i5 and an i7 if all they run is word and browse the Internet.

Re: The Checkout
It's not about knowing the difference, it's about truth in advertising. If an ad says "lowest prices, guaranteed", it should mean something. And that shouldn't include them being the only outlet to stock that coloured printer, despite other outlets stocking it in white, much cheaper.IQS.RLOW wrote:Welcome to the real world of franchising and agencies...boxy wrote:http://www.abc.net.au/tv/thecheckout/

They're flat out lying, and I welcome journalists like this who take the time to do the leg work on behalf of millions, and inform us

Re: The Checkout
You are making it too complicated. Even if they did honour it in spirit, 99% of people will never realise you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Even places that promise they'll beat competitors by 10% can get away with overcharging simply counting on the laziness of most of their customers (and a 200% markup).
There is also nothing you can do about it. Most places have brands that they own or are exclusive to them that are not obviously 'home' brands. If you buy enough of an item from the Chinese supplier, they will rebadge it for you. If you try to ban it, they will make it just sufficiently different to get away with it.
This seems especially true for laptops. It's like each retail chain has their own model numbers with the same specs as their competitors. It is a way of reducing direct competition.

Re: The Checkout
Of course there is nothing you can do about it. The internet is seen as a way to make companies compete, on a level playing ground. But it wont happen. They come to agreements with search providers, and ensure that all their suppliers offer the same rates.
Individuals will never be able to compete with multinational corporations (once the corps notice what the first wave of individuals are doing).
But it's good to get the info back, on the corporate bastardry.
