Barry O'Farrell resigns over wine

Post by Black Orchid » Wed Apr 16, 2014 12:37 pm

Outgoing New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell says he stands by the evidence he has given to a corruption inquiry, following his shock resignation this morning.

The Premier was expected to attend a road funding announcement with the Prime Minister in Sydney this morning, but instead gave the media ten minutes notice of the press conference where he announced he will be stepping down. No questions were taken from reporters.

He said a thank you note would be tendered to the Independent Commission Against Corruption for a $3000 bottle of wine he still cannot remember.

The handwritten thank you card for the 1959 Penfolds Grange, from O'Farrell's birth year, appears to be signed by the Premier and his wife.

"Thank you for the kind note and wonderful wine. 1959 was a good year even if it is getting even further away! Thanks for all your support, kind regards Baz & Rosemary."

Yesterday, O'Farrell flatly denied suggestions he wrote a letter supporting Australian Water Holdings (AWH) in exchange for Liberal Party donations. Nor did he recall receiving a bottle of vintage Grange wine, bought for $3000 by AWH and apparently couriered to his home just after the 2011 state election.

In a media statement yesterday O'Farrell said "the 1959 Grange was not received by me or my wife", and that he was "holidaying in Queensland" when the bottle was delivered to his house.

This morning the Premier called it a "significant memory failure on my part" and said he will "accept the consequences".

"As someone who believes in accountability, in responsibility I accept the consequences of my action," he said. "In no way did I seek to mislead wilfully ... the Independent Commission Against Corruption."

All over a bottle of wine. What next?

At least he did what he assumed to be the right thing and resigned.

If he were from the left he would be hanging on by his toe nails til the bitter end.

Only just saw this. I guess he is trying to be an "honest" pollie and do what he says he would do. A leftard Premier wouldn't have been so honest.

Temporarily, DaS, I have taken you off me "ignore" list. You seem to be the single digit leftard here.

So?

The guy was given a bottle of wine. Big fucking deal. IF anyone gave you a bottle of "that" wine, DaS, what would you do with it? Give it back? Drink it? Save it for your grandchild's 21st or your Golden Wedding Anniversary?

NOBODY will ever drink that bottle of wine. NOBODY! Instead of resigning, Fatty should have just auctioned it off for "homeless people" or "abused children" or "old people" or something.

Nothing honest about this ankle, he lied yesterday and thought he'd get away with it thinking the note he wrote would have been chucked out long ago. The fact you make excuses for this asshole show your hypocrisy. It's the best thing to happen for the Libs, Baird will be a much better Premier, the Libs were looking at losing many of those seats they won at the last election with unpopular fatty at the helm.

Baird is a dick and you know nothing you fwit... lets see you prove anything you said was more than your usual stupid bias. No proof to back it up... just personal and political bias.
DOLT - A person who is stupid and entirely tedious at the same time, like bwian. Oblivious to their own mental incapacity. On IGNORE - Warrior, mellie, Nom De Plume, FLEKTARD

Anthony Abbott. 'He innocently, inadvertently misled (To give false or misleading information or to guide in the wrong direction) CAC yesterday and he has taken the utterly honourable decision of stepping down.' Some-time in the future depending on how things go!

Aint no man dragging the misses in as his defence! "'massive memory fail' "neither he nor his wife Rosemary had any memory of receiving the gift in April 2011"
