Mysterious Chlorine smell aboard Aircraft

Post by mellie » Thu Sep 12, 2013 8:19 pm

There was high drama aboard a Jetstar flight to Mackay March 11, 2010 when six passengers and four crew members became ill, feeling light-headed.

A Jetstar spokesperson said the incident occurred at 8.45am, about an hour into flight JQ 882 from Brisbane to Mackay.

Some of the aircraft’s 128 passengers reported a “chlorine-type smell” in the cabin, she said.

Similarly, on board another airbus more recently in Germany...
A Germanwings Airbus A319-100, registration D-AKNG performing flight 4U-396 from Cologne (Germany) to Dublin (Ireland) with 127 passengers, had just reached cruise level 360 about 210nm northwest of Cologne over the North Sea when passengers complained about feeling unwell due to smell of chlorine on board of the aircraft. The crew decided to return to Cologne, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 14L about 40 minutes later. One passenger was taken to a hospital, a number of passengers were treated at the airport for nausea, three crew members were taken to a hospital for checks.

A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration D-AGWK is estimated to reach Dublin with a delay of 6 hours.

The airline reported the aircraft is being examined, so far no cause has been found for the smell.

Passengers reported emergency services requested them to leave their hand luggage on the aircraft for examination.

This is 2013 and airlines should be able to determine the cause of the chlorine-like smell aboard their aircraft, so why the silence?

Neither Germanwings or Jetstar feel at liberty to divulge the cause of the sickness-inducing smell it seems.

How many other incidents have there been?

And what would be the likely cause of this chlorine-like smell that makes crew and passengers feel so unwell?

Do the public have a right to know when an airline clearly have the capacity/means to determine the cause of a hazardous smell aboard their aircraft, though for some reason or other appear to have kept their findings to themselves?

The secret on-board spa in uber first class needs to be better concealed and made air tight.

Umm.... cattle truck....

Maybe then there is cause for concern.

Chlorine is deadly at high concentrations in the air.

But where did it come from, and how many more incidents have there been I wonder?

The airlines are remaining tight-lipped about it.

Something must have caused it... but what?

Another incident involving a mysterious smell.

Common denominators...

Vast majority of those most affected are crew members, meaning perhaps it's a slow leak, and they are being exposed throughout their shift, over a period of several hours not just during one flight.

All incidents involve budget carriers Airbuses.

And another....

Heathrow-bound pilots 'made dizzy by smell as they landed'

The captain and co-pilot of a plane coming in to land at Heathrow donned oxygen masks after a strong smell made them feel dizzy, a report has said.

Despite the co-pilot experiencing eye irritation and being nauseous, the pair landed the 139-passenger Airbus safely.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report said there was also an odour in the passenger cabin.

The report said the source of the smell, which affected the aircraft on 21 October, could not be found.

The AAIB report described the incident, on the Lufthansa Airbus A321 from Frankfurt to London Heathrow, as serious.

I
ncident: Lufthansa A321 near Prague on Mar 14th 2013, odour in cabin
By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Mar 15th 2013 14:18Z, last updated Friday, Mar 15th 2013 14:18Z

A Lufthansa Airbus A321-100, registration D-AIRH performing flight LH-2466 from Munich (Germany) to Helsinki (Finland) with 160 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL350 about 20nm northeast of Prague (Czech Republic) when the crew decided to return to Munich due to a strange odour in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely back on Munich's runway 26R about 35 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration D-AIDU reached Helsinki with a delay of 4 hours.

The airline confirmed a strange smell on board prompted the return to Munich, the cause of the smell has not yet been determined.

A number of passengers described the smell as electric/electronic, others characterised the smell similiar to oil fumes. The smell was light but clearly detectable.

Something stinks all right, and it's not only coming from these planes cabins.

Source of smell unknown?

Hmmmm...

Seems to me the common factor is all incidents happened on Airbus aircraft. Not seeing any mention of this happening on aircraft from other manufacturers. What I'd like to know is how recently the aircraft were manufactured or if they'd recently had their interiors refitted, because this sounds a lot like the sort of complaints people sensitive to certain chemicals experience around new synthetic fiber carpets.

Then again, it could just be another case of a French aircraft manufacturer trying to kill people. Seriously, if you can help it at all, stay the fuck away from airbus aircraft, especially ones that have been in serial production for less than two decades.

Out gassing if its a new aircraft.

Get 400 people in a new car straight off the block and you will get a percentage sensitive to the plastics. Some love it, some file law suits.
