"Shocking"

Post by Mattus » Sat Jul 13, 2013 11:44 am

Egypt's Coptic Maspero Youth have expressed their abject shock over the constitutional declaration which fixes Islam as the religion of state, and Sunni Sharia as the basis of legislation in the post Morsi era.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire has been the theme of the Arab spring. Egypt has gone from a totalitarian yet secularist Mubarak, to a just-as-totalitarian and Islamic fundamentalist Morsi, to now a military and now just as fundamentalist rule.

Things are not improving. The west, having learned nothing from history and too much from cinema, celebrate these rebel uprisings think they will spread democracy and the western way of life.

As long as they don't do something stupid like pissing off Israel or renigging on their treaty obligations concerning the Suez Canal I honestly wouldn't give a fuck if everyone in Egypt disappeared up their own asses tomorrow morning. We're talking about a people who are part of an ethnic group that's not anywhere near psychologically advanced enough to deal with being part of a democracy beyond simple mob rule. For fuck's sake, this is shit that western society has spent a few thousand years working towards and we still haven't gotten it right, so big surprise Arabs, a group of people who peaked culturally back during the Crusades, can't figure what the fuck to make of it.

Working democracies work, not because the individuals within them are mature, but because the processes are adhered to... and those processes are designed to smooth out the fickle nature of humans (as much as possible).

Those processes only work if, and there's the key, IF the people operating that democracy are mature enough to actually stick to the process and not derail it. In Egypt we saw exactly that, Morsi and his cronies got power, let it go to their heads, and immediately subverted the democratic process in favor of trying to force an islamic theocracy on all Egyptians regardless of if they shared the same religious views.

Doesn't matter how good your process is if the monkeys operating that system keep trying to break it.

And in the case of Egypt their process failed entirely to prevent humans from fucking up. It's not just that Arabs can't handle democracy, it's more that democracy itself is a terrible idea simply because any democracy is only as competent as its stupidest demographic.
