Entanglement can be created "after the entangled particles have been measured and may no longer exist."
The finding can be integrated into potential quantum computers, one hopes. Causality, clearly, is a quaint, irrelevant concept.

Jeeeeeezus "The head-scratcher is......" The whole fucken concept is a head scratcher. Here I was thinking my job was gonna do my head in....or is it.....has it already....maybe I have no head to do in.......insert Ned Flanders girly scream!

The probability of the particles being entangled is the same as the probability of them being polarized before they are entangled. Therefore there is correlation between polarization and subsequent entanglement of particles. However, the relationship is not causal.
The popsci.com article is misleading I think, by using the terms "cause" and "effect" in the title. Notice that these are not used by the original nature paper, which instead discusses probability and correlation.

It was a thought experiment that lead Einstein to come up with the theory of relativity.
