It is a Greenie "dream" as it could possibly stop people using their cars, and polluting the air we breathe ....... Y-A-W-N.

Tell the people in Newcastle, Geelong, Wollongong, (can't think of other towns) that they have to pay more TAX so that they MAY get a new way of travelling to work in 2025?

Sydney already has a rail system that doesn't work. Canberra does NOT. Tourists don't come to Canberra to hit the night life, they visit, ONCE (often with the kids) to check out Parliament House, the War Memorial and a couple of other National things ...... Canberrans do NOT want this place to be a Tourist Attraction. Believe me.

I think that Canberra would probably be suitable for a rail system (as long as the population warrants it). It has differing precincts, that are fairly well defined. Different areas for industry, housing, business, government, with large tracts of open space between many of them. It would be much easier to implement in Canberra (because of the space), so that commuters can drive a few k's to a rail hub, and then catch a train into work or wherever.

I'm unsure if the population warrants it, as yet, but Canberra town planners have always been very good at getting projects planned early, before they're needed, or at least ensuring that space is left for later implementation. It's probably the best planned city in the country (and one of the best in the world), if you can navigate roundabouts (which were well established in Canberra long before NSW started putting them in everywhere).

Why the sudden interest in Canberra, Boxy? Do you live here, like Ele?

An interesting post of yours about the ACT .... I will try to understand what you are saying and comment, later. OK

That is fine.Boxy. Good to see you here!

Most Aussies have no idea about Canberra. It is really a World of its Own ... and very Leftist. Good to find somebody on Political Animals who is at least interested in the Capital. Those who live here a just ordinary Aussies.

So, Boxy, .....why do you think a rail line would be better than the ACTION bus service, that runs at billions of dollars loss?

Been to Canberra and through Canberra quite a few times.
I don't think it or the ACT has a population that warrants a rail system and I'm not sure that the roads are really appropriate for a Light Rail system. Nor that the population needs one.
As for things running at a loss that's probably a management problem and poor decisions and planning... hmmmm... wonder where that blame belongs.

To and Through is NOT like living here, mate. ;)

It is still a fairly safe environment to bring up children and teenagers. The schools are very "green" as are the Unis.

Light Rail is a really, really STUPID idea. IF Canberra was clustered in one area, perhaps, but travelling from Northside to Southside is about 50K. It is a ridiculous idea and typical of a Greenie.

I don't know if it would be. Just saying that if anywhere is going to be suitable, Canberra is.

And I'd rather ride a train than buses. Much more comfortable. Buses are alright for short journeys.

Considering that probably 45% of workers in the ACT are NOT Pubes (public servants) and how Canberra is set out ... WHY would ANYONE actually want "light rail".?

When I lived in Melbourne and Sydney I used the trains. Here? Unless you care less when you "sign on" ... take your time. Nobody gives a sh*t ....

light rail for whom? teens? Great idea. :f
