PM Kevin Rudd did not mention a boat believed to be sinking today, as he spoke of getting more cooperation from Indonesia on asylum seekers.

As Mr Rudd and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met in Bogor today, near the capital Jakarta, it emerged that a boat carrying about 80 asylum seekers had issued a distress call.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)confirmed that it had issued an alert to ships in the area that the boat was believed to be taking on water.

An Australian navy patrol boat was expected to arrive at the location 42 nautical miles from Java later on Friday, while a Customs Dash 8 surveillance aircraft had also been deployed.

"It's reported that there are 80 people on board," an AMSA spokeswoman told AAP. "We believe they are taking on water."

The rescue mission was mounted after those on the boat contacted AMSA directly, and came as Mr Rudd and Dr Yudhoyono were discussing the asylum-seeker issue at a palace in Bogor, near Jakarta.

Indonesia's search and rescue agency - BASARNAS - had no idea that a rescue was even under way when contacted on Friday.

We should stop immediately sending the Navy up there to patrol and escort these vessels.
These people are not our responsibility.
Not Australians.
Not a military threat.
They are the ones using criminal means to enter Australia and putting their own lives at risk.
