So you agree that "the possibility of anthropogenic warming dominated the peer-reviewed literature even then?"Rorschach wrote:But I never said there was scientific consensus back then.
I merely stated the facts
Facts don't embarrass me at all those in denial do.

Re: Global Warming
I don't recall it being an issue then. Do you?
Did you even bother to read the links I posted?
I guess not.
So I guess you will continue to repeat alarmist claptrap or do some checking and agree with this...

It would appear that people were less "Chicken Little" in the 70s.Despite many claims to the contrary, the 1970's global cooling fears were widespread among many scientists and in the media. Despite the fact that there was no UN IPCC organization created to promote global cooling in the 1970s and despite the fact that there was nowhere near the tens of billions of dollars in funding spent today to promote man-made global warming, fears of a coming ice age, showed up in peer-reviewed literature, at scientific conferences, voiced by prominent scientists and throughout the media.
Newsweek Magazine even used the climate “tipping point” argument in 1975. Newsweek wrote April 28, 1975 article: "The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality."
But on October 24, 2006, Newsweek admitted it erred in predicting a coming ice age in the 1970's. (NYT: Obama's global warming promoting science czar Holdren 'warned of a coming ice age' in 1971 – September 29, 2009 & also see: NASA warned of human caused coming 'ice age' in 1971 – Washington Times – September 19, 2007 and also see: 1975 New York Times: "Scientists Ask Why World Climate is Changing, Major Cooling May Be Ahead", May 21, 1975 and see: 1974 Time Magazine: "Another Ice Age," June 24, 1974

No, Roach, it was you that was repeating the alarmist claptrap about 1970's global cooling.

Getting a tad excited are we?
Why should I read your links when it is apparent you don't read mine?
Why should I read your links when you clearly have a closed mind?
I gather you believed "The Inconvenient Truth" and treat it as gospel.
What makes you think I haven't already read it or similar articles.
I've already stated my conclusion about it.
You forget I was an adult during the 70s, I know what was reported.
You call me names and carry on like a nut-case in denial of the facts and create strawmen.
I just present the facts.
How many times must I state... I never said there was a consensus.

Re: Global Warming
CIA didn't quite see it that way...
In August, 1974, the Office of Research and Development of the Central Intelligence Agency produced a report entitled “A Study of Climatological Research as it Pertains to Intelligence Problems” – available online at: http://www.climatemonitor.it/wp-content ... 2/1974.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Some interesting bits of the report follow:
“The western world’s leading climatologists have confirmed recent reports of a detrimental global climate change. The stability of most nations is based upon a dependable source of food, but this stability will not be possible under the new climatic era. A forecast by the University of Wisconsin projects that the earth’s climate is returning to that of the neo-boreal era (1600- 1850) – an era of drought, famine and political unrest in the western world.
Climate has not been a prime consideration of intelligence analysis because, until recently, it has not caused any significant perturbations to the status of major nations. This is so because during 50 of the last 60 years the Earth has, on the average, enjoyed the best agricultural climate since the eleventh century. An early twentieth century world food surplus hindered US efforts to maintain and equalise farm production and incomes.”
“The University of Wisconsin was the first accredited academic center to forecast that a major global climatic change was underway. Their analysis of the Icelandic temperature data, which they contend has historically been a bellwether for northern hemisphere climatic conditions, indicated that the world was returning to the type of climate which prevailed during the first part of the last century.” “Their “Food for Thought” chart (Figure 7) conveys some idea of the enormity of the problem and the precarious state in which most of the world’s nations could find themselves if the Wisconsin forecast is correct.”

Re: Global Warming
The current consensus is based on 77 climate scientists but in 1974 there were 85...and that's not a consensus?
(1) Conferences and warnings to governments: See: Implications of the Climatic Controversy for Global Society, Irving Kaplan, November 1980, “In 1972, a sizable group of climatologists meeting at Brown University issued letters to the governments of the world in which they warned of a global climatic disaster.
In 1974, the International Federation of Institutes of Advanced Study issued a grave message to the community of governments from a meeting in Bonn.
In 1976, a meeting of 85 climatologists chaired by the late Nobel Laureate Willard Libby and pioneer climatologist Cesare Emiliani put forth another warning which it had written in 1974 and which provided the same message in greater detail.
Nature reported the consensus of the 1979 World Climate Conference: “that the world had entered a 10,000 year cooling, that the warming theory was complex and questionable and that the loss of life and economic substance to the climate would increase.”
