On Wednesday, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee decided that Gardasil was too expensive and, just maybe, not what it was cracked up to be anyway.

The PABC has a history of rejection. It knocks back about 70 per cent of applications for medicines. Which is probably a very proper thing to do. Because, often, international pharma is attempting to gouge the Australian market by charging prices which reflect the investment required to develop their drug.

On Thursday morning, The Australian reported one PABC source as saying: "We are not interested in propping up the CSL share price."

I also note the date for your article... I also recall the rumours etc re Gardisil at the time and that some had since it become available adverse reactions to it. Hence the Department's reluctance earlier on top of the PABC decision.

The original wide release date for Gardisil was 2008 - 2 years after this article.

CSL had proposed a 2008 start for a national immunisation campaign.

I note there is no evidence in the article to back up your claim re Abbott's daughters.
