Can you explain how this works? If we traveled by gravitational assistance - like unmanned Voyager I - using the gravity well of the sun as a slingshot into deep space, it would take 19,000 years to get there.

Humans have come a long way in a short time. Give yourself a pat on the back boxy. 14 billion years ago something came from nothing. What we forget it that "nothing" is still with us. It is what the Buddhists call "the deathless" or "eternity consciousness." The big bang was a big YES that is still continuing. It wasn't a big "bang" but an ongoing bannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn ... that is only speeding up. It isn't all a meaningless accident.boxy wrote:And in all that time, our improvements in the art of killing has made the improvement in music look 3rd rate.AiA in Atlanta wrote:In just a short span man has gone from beating on a drum to Mozart. Wild assumption. It could be a meaningles accident. There could be universes popping up all the time with different laws of physics. Some last a nano second before collapsing, others become an eternal nothingness. It isn't all a meaningless accident.
The only thing that is not meaningless is that in this universe the balance of the laws have permitted:
- an in-balance in the initial creation of matter and antii-matter leading to some left over matter
- an expanding universe that appears to be increasing more rapidly as time progresses
- the laws allow for pockets or order to form in what appeatrs to be chaos
- in some pockets of order complex molecules can form that can self replicate
- Some self replicating molecules evolve into more complex forms
- Some of these form become self aware.
- Some of these think there is a purpose for the universe.... not all
- some invent a thing called god to explain what they cannot understand

Have seen some facts and figures illustrating how improbable it is that the physical universe is an accident. Will see if I can find them.

However in an infinite number of universes it becomes probable.

The physical universe exists because it has to.
There cannot be a state of "nothingness." According to modern physics, nothingness is perfect symmetry and connot remain that way for more than an instant. This is because of the law of gravity. Particles pop in and out of existence continously, everywhere.
About fifteen billion years ago, one of them inflated to gigantic proportions, as if riding on a fabric that stretches like elastic (spacetime), and that is the universe we see today.
The universe is probably not spherical, it is a three-dimensional projection of a flat geometry. And even though some astrophysicists are tossing around the idea that there could be a multiverse of other universes, I really don't sense that this could be true.
This universe is not infinite. It had a beginning and will have an end someday uncountable trillions of years from now, inflating faster and faster, until all galaxies riding on this three-dimension "flat" stretchy geometical surface have flown so far apart that there is nothing left to see - and the universe will "end" in a big rip, where even the last remaining atoms will be torn to shreds.
The universe did not happen by accident, nor was it "created" by a super intelligence. It was literally created out of nothing by gravitaional fluctuations. And everything in the universe behaves according to the opposing forces in play, and the trajectories of particles.
Therefore all things that happen, DO happen for a reason. But this is not supernatural, or the "will of God," this is because of cause and effect.
Cause and effect are not random, but they are not supernatural either. There are no "miracles" and nothing that is supernatural in a natural universe. But things do happen according to the "reasons" of cause and effect.

There was certainly a state of nothingness before the big bang. And any accomplished meditator will tell you that it is still here with us. It is the ground of being.

Particle physicists say that the question of "something" exising before the universe appeared is senseless.
They say there is no answer to that, because there is no question. They say the singularity that suddenly inflated in that instant was one-dimensional and had no "other side."
There was no "before" the universe, so to speak.
I am talking about the physical universe only. Anything else, such as the "meditations" and the "being" of men is subjective, and in the minds of men only.

Why relegate consciousness to an afterthought?annielaurie wrote:Particle physicists say that the question of "something" exising before the universe appeared is senseless.
