Fuck the "bipartisan" probe. How about an indipendant inquiry, without any fucking political stooges sticking their snouts in to try to make mileage off it

I heard that the engine had been turned off deliberately and instructions given to wait until a Navy boat arrived to pick them up. They underestimated the weather conditions and lost control of the boat.boxy wrote:It lost power, didn't it? But I guess we'll find out, eventually, after a drawn out enquiry (it took months to get the real picture of the "children overboard" incident).
The reports of the men shoving the women and children out of the way to get to the lifejackets to save their own lives didn't do their cause any favours. Although I feel compassion for some of those who are genuine refugees, the way they treat their families is abhorrent. They flee here for a better life and leave their wives and children at home to suffer the consequences of their actions.
I assumed there would be a change of policy after this tragedy, but Gillard has stated that the legislation will be left unchanged.

Yes, after my previous post I read that the Indonesian crew cut the engine and advised passengers to wait and be rescued by the navy.mantra wrote:I heard that the engine had been turned off deliberately and instructions given to wait until a Navy boat arrived to pick them up. Suggesting they are aware of universal maritime laws regarding rescue and asylum. Which off-shore processing and exclusion zones within our territorial waters was implemented to circumvent.
While the crews tend to be Indo-chinese, predominantly opportunistic Indonesian fishermen, there seems to be a pattern of boats carrying Afgans being sabotaged. I remember one within the last couple of years being deliberately set ablaze, and another I forget how many years prior having a hole punched in the hull. In both cases, after becoming aware they'd been spotted by the navy.
But then if we're going to get involved in other's wars, we get stuck with a moral obligation to accept runaways from wherever our armed forces intervene, into our welfare banana republic.

We committed ourselves internationally approximately 50 years ago to accepting refugees and we're stuck with it. The Coalition managed to slow it down, but we're paying the price for this today with all the compensation cases we're liable for.But then if we're going to get involved in other's wars, we get stuck with a moral obligation to accept runaways from wherever our armed forces intervene, into our welfare banana republic.
If you think it's bad now, and I'm sure many of us do, wait until the US waves the red flag to China. We'll become the world's dumping ground for the displaced.
