I had a Ford Falcon once that had around 450,000 kms on it and it just kept going. No real problems.

Fords used to have good engines but rusty body because of double skin. That was in 1970s.Black Orchid wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2026 6:51 pmI had a Ford Falcon once that had around 450,000 kms on it and it just kept going. No real problems.

great cars but both suffered from rust that could not be fixed -
even with rust kill and Bondi - fiberglass-reinforced body filler -
the same places would rust out again within 2 years.
They didn't galvanize the whole body in a tank during manufacture
and the steel had Sulphur impurities that formed sulfuric acid when in contact with water.
The cars of the 1990s and beyond were all galvanized - and better steel -
and so don't suffer from rust.
( except many Chinese cars where they cheat and use spray on galvanizing -
not dipped in a tank using electrolysis )

Re: I hate new cars:
Yes - excellent in the dry outback areas - they didn't rust there.
Try having one parked near the ocean or bay around Melbourne -
during the damp winter months.

Re: I hate new cars:
A mechanic told me a story from 1989 -
a lady bought a brand new car and it was rusted to bits in only 4 years -
she lived in Frankston right next to the beach and the car got salt water spray and rain all the time.
It ended up at Simms metal for recycling.
I think it was a cheap Japanese car?

Tons of fish oil pumped into a car parked near sea shore were not helping either.Bobby wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2026 8:45 amA mechanic told me a story from 1989 -

BTW, cars in cold countries had similar problem because of salted roads.
