I've always been happy with a separate grid. It has served us well until this freak cold snap. We even sometimes sell excess power to California at inflated prices to cover the EPA fees.

Our problem this go around is that the cold weather froze our wind turbines. They make close to 20% of our power. That left us in a bind and nobody else was in a position to help us. My power has only gone off 3 times for a total of 3 hours. Some areas had transformers explode or ice take down trees over power lines. Some of my friends went 2 days without power in this cold.
Wow, that is serious

No, frozen wind turbines aren’t the main culprit for Texas’ power outages

From The Texas Tribune. ;)

I'm a big fan of wind power. I knew there were also natural gas problems. I just didn't know the extent of it. Either way, the cold killed our energy production because ERCOT was caught with their pants down.
Yeah, anyway hope you are all well!

I notice the UK around Norwich where relatives live seem to be also having large snow falls this year!

Maybe the Southern Hemisphere like OZ is due next winter!

Where I am summer has been very very mild. I can't remember having a summer this mild for a very very long time.

Yes - In Melbourne - we've had no over 40 degree heatwaves for 3 or 4 days.
It's a cool summer compared to normal - mush nicer.

Also important to note that the wind turbines have no ice prevention and mitigation strategies in play... big mistake!

ERCOT has commitments, there is only so much electric energy being produced. Since the Chinese wind turbines reduced the load on power plants ERCOT sold the excess, now that the turbines have stopped turning because they are frozen there is a shortage. People here are freezing to death in their homes or trying to stay warm and dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. Rolling blackouts are unacceptable in a State that is energy independent but a victim of bad management. All the fear created by local Media just makes the whole freeze worse, being close to the coast makes us a little warmer than north of Houston.

The irony in all this is that none of the ERCOT board directors live in Texas!
Meanwhile, outspoken Texan senator Ted Cruise has gone on holidays, landing safely in Culcun Mexico where the temp is a wonderfully warm 79F!

If Ted Cruz were a Democrat you would have never heard anything about it. If the Left didn't have double standards they wouldn't have any standards at all!

It was a politically tone deaf idea to go to Cancun, but once done, he should have owned up to his decision and ignored the media. There was nothing that Cruz could do about the situation in Texas. This is all about optics and political scrutiny. At least he wasn't calling a press conference to invite tourists to Texas like Pelosi was doing at the start of the covid plandemic in China town.
