The good old ALP Government in the ACT has brought in Laws about Cats. Certain new suburbs (Gungahlin area) have outlawed allowing cats OUTSIDE unless in an especially built enclosure. I think there is a largish FINE and cats are supposed to be "micro-chipped" etcetera. A good try but wonder whether this is another "Greenie" thing.

My daughter was given a kitten back in around 1990 by a "friend". She called it Neferti, it was known as Neffy. It was female and I spent $350 on getting it desexed. A lot of money back then!

Neffy was an indoor cat, slept 18 hours a day and "head in food bowl" some of rest of the time, if she wasn't squawking for attention or rubbing herself on your legs.

When my daughter went to Uni, I gave Neffy away to someone who replied to my "cat for free" ad. Next I got a call saying that Neffy had "disappeared" .... I expected her to arrive at my doorstep for years but she never did. I have a guilt complex about that and as such, call myself Neferti (Neffy) on these joints.

I would love to give my daughter's cats away, but it would be a very hard decision to make. I didn't want to be stuck with any more pets and cats are not rewarding animals. I resent them only eating expensive food and I resent the vet bills.

I have my oldest son's cat. I did not want anymore animals and even if I did I would have preferred to choose it myself or have it choose me ie another stray.

However, it's here now and has been for over 2 years and as much as I was not too happy about it, it will stay here for its lifetime. I would never just get rid of it. I couldn't do it.

He's also the first sole house cat I have ever had. My son didn't want him outdoors so he will only go outside when I am with him. I spend quite a bit of time out on the back patio reading so as to get him outdoors but if the neighbours on one side start talking loudly (he does not like foreign languages ) he bolts for the back door.

Why do foreigners always converse so loudly?

I've never had a cat, I've had a few dogs over the years but never a cat, they just don't do it for me. I just lost my last dog in April, she was 17 years old, I still miss her.
I'm not sure I could form the same sort of bond with a cat that is possible with a dog.

I love animals and before you start accusing me of not being "compassionate" you need to hear the whole story, instead of going off half-cocked!

The reason I got "rid of Neffy to a good home" was because I was going overseas, my daughter didn't want her as she already had a new kitten, which she called Princess. Also, my daughter agreed that I should "find a good home" for "Neffy", so I did.

I have never been a "cat person" (my daughter is though) ... I much prefer dogs but I haven't had a dog since I have lived in Canberra. I had a dear little Corgi in Sydney and there is a You Tube thing about a Corgi puppy being confused with his image in a mirror. Very funny and reminded me of "PQ" when he was little. Cute.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Skip. They really are part of the family (as are cats, I suppose) but they don't live forever but 17 is a very Old Age for a dog!

Oh thanks Nef, yea I know I was lucky to have her for seventeen years. I remember a farmer that used to live down the road from me threatening to shoot her about fifteen years ago when she was young and a bit wild.
She used to keep bad company.
I nearly lost her a couple of times over the past few years, mostly to ticks. She'd build up a resistance for a lot of years but as she got older they started to knock her around a bit. She was a tough old bitch though, she outlived all the other dogs around here that she used to fight with. She hated other bitches, loved males but hated bitches. She was desexed as a pup too so it wasn't a sex thing.

Best way to get rid of cats is to take up crayfishing. The fur makes the meat last so much longer and its fun trying to get them into the pots.
