Really good training for a World War 1 and 2 type preparation for going straight into the army as good old canon fodder.

It's not about teaching you knots... it's about giving you experiences and confidence that you would otherwise miss out on.

Taking knots, for example. You learn how to tie shitloads of them, but, in adulthood, you don't remember them, unless you use them regularly. However, you do know that you have the ability to do it, if you put your mind to it.

I especially like the fact that Naffie googled a knot, to cover what she'd forgotten from the guides. Perhaps IT badges are entirely consistent with what the late, great Lord BP would have encouraged

I can do knots. I was interned into the Brownies for a few years in primary school and hated every second of it. The worst was bob a job week. I lived in a wealthy area, but I was treated like a slave. One time, I spent a full Saturday sweeping and raking up endless leaves on this huge property. Then I did a week's worth of washing up plus babysat 3 toddlers for a couple of hours. At the end of the day, aged 9, when I could barely stand they paid me 20 cents. This was my first serious lesson in how exploitative some of the rich can be and the amoral lengths they go to, to hold onto their cash.

I was a Scout until I got old enough to be embarrassed. Watched a documentary the other week. Fascinating. I think it was called "Teenage." It showed the 20th century through the eyes of American, English and German teenagers. It made the claim that the Boy Scouts was created to feed the war machine by training boys to become soldiers. And it did.
