Most people aren't up to working till they are 80, many that think they can have dementia.

But it's NOT about working until 80 (or 70, or even 67). The pension age doesn't have anything to do with the retirement age.

Yes I guess they were. You can retire at 35 ( or any other age) if you can afford it. 65 was the mandatory retirement age for men and I think it was 60 for women (may have been 55). After retiring, most people draw on their super, if they have it, or some other government payment if they don't. The age pension was/is for people who have no other income.

Or until they run out of Super.
Some people will run out very quickly.
So The Pension is the safety net for most.
