To be fair, George W. has known Putin for a very long time thanks to his father, George H. W. Bush, who before being Vice President and President of the US held the position of Director Central Intelligence at the same time Putin was defense attache to the USSR Consulate in Washington. Again they interacted quite a bit when Bush was US ambassador to the UN.

For a former spook, Putin is trust worthy to a point. You can trust that as long as your interests and his interests are aligned that he will deal in good faith, but should interests conflict, Putin will ALWAYS act in the best interests of himself and the Ródina. These days, as the biggest of the Oligarch fatcats in Russia, Putin's interests and the interests of the Ródina tend to be the same thing.

If you'd actually bothered to read the entire paragraph you'd have seen where I said exactly that.

Maybe WWIII begins here.

Isolating Russia is probably not a good thing. taking them out of the G8 looks like a very serious step.

Tensions rise as Vladimir Putin mobilises all reservists and US Secretary of State John Kerry flies into Kiev

Russian forces bloodlessly seized Crimea over the weekend, and yesterday surrounded several small Ukrainian military outposts and demanded the Ukrainian troops disarm. Some refused, leading to standoffs, although no shots were fired.

"Russia chose this brazen act of aggression. If Russia wants to be a G8 country, it needs to behave like a G8 country," he continued.

"[Putin] may find himself with asset freezes on Russian business, American business may pull back, there may be a further tumble of the ruble," added Mr Kerry.

All their hidden moneys and assets stolen from the people may get frozen... that is the real thing they need to worry about.

I seriously doubt this situation would result in a global war. The only reason we're saying anything is because we're expected to by treaty obligation. We honestly don't give a flying fuck about the Ukraine, and Russia has better historical claim for owning Crimea anyway. That's before getting into the issues involved with multiple nuclear powers interacting.
