Now it is clear. Assange wants to use this political position if elected as a tool to protect him from the US.

Mr Assange spoke to The Conversation website at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London where he was granted asylum in June to avoid extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.
If he wins a Senate seat at elections on Sept. 24, Mr Assange told the website that the US Department of Justice would drop its espionage investigation rather than risk a diplomatic row.
The British government would follow suit, otherwise "the political costs of the current standoff will be higher still," he said.
Assange supporters last week enrolled him to vote in Victoria state, a necessary step toward being nominated as a candidate.
Nominations for the Senate are likely to close on Aug. 22, and the six-year term of office would begin on July 1, 2014.

Yeah.....read that earlier today. His logic is a mystery to me. Even elected Australian Senators are subject to the Laws of other Nations. Just ask Senator Nick X. Ya know, what really pisses me of about this bloke is not that he published stuff which some people thought he should not have (even though the MSM got on his coat tails pretty smartly.....and did exactly the same thing) it is his very obvious belief that he is Jesus resurrected. I hope he gets to run.....and that this Country sends him the message that 'you are a cock head, Julian.'
