Science 'girl thing' video branded offensive

Science 'girl thing' video branded offensive

A film using images of lipstick, killer heels and a handsome male laboratory worker to encourage women to pursue science careers has been condemned as sexist and demeaning.

The PC nazi's are at it again. Check this out.

Do you think it is sexist. More women should be interested in careers in science, why not pop it up a bit.

Meh...PC whingers at it again

It's not like any girls smart enough to be really interested in the sciences would be swayed by this ad to consider their career choice. They already are interested in it because it challenges their mind.

It may however challenge thos girls who wouldn't have considered it because of the lack of glamour associated with it but I doubt they would stick with it long term even if they were smart enough to be able to pass because the harsh reality is that the sciences are not a glamorous profession...except for the attention whores that sell themselves to be paid by the taxpayer funded church of govt global warming

Being a writer Annie, you would understand, it's like trying to sex up being a writer to try and attract people to being an writer when the simple fact is that certain people are hard wired to being able to perform certain function.

Not just anyone can decide to be a writer, an artist, a comedian, a scientist, a geologist or whatever...each of these professions attract a certain type of person that will ultimately be successful or fall into mediocrity

The successful scientist will go on to make ground breaking discoveries and the rest will come up with toilet cleaner that sticks to the bowl. The artists will have one or two that manage to sell a million records and the rest will probably starve to death. The comedians will be in the same boat (unless you are an aberrartion like Wil Anderson who is incredibly lucky that someone hasnt shot him for being the only comedian that has a career without a skerrick of talent)

I suppose, using that last example, it comes down to a love, interest and drive in what you do that makes you successful.

An advertisement does not generate this but it may make some consider a path that they never would have.

It is better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all...

I agree IQ, that video is such irritating trash, so typical that ads have to be sexed up in order to get the attention of this generation of twits who think about nothing but fashion and shrieking twit music and texting their friends.

I have to laugh seeing those models prancing around a science lab. I suppose teenaged girls will get the idea that's the way things are going to be, and that all boyfriend lab technicians are hot, and that science rocks.

Well, I love science and study up on things like cosmology and particle physics on my own on science websites around the internet, but not for a moment do I kid myself that I know anything about it, as I'm no mathemetician or physicist. It's just that it is fascinating to me and I can grasp a lay person's general understanding of scientific theory fairly well.

Also I think your comment on global warming is right on the nose.

As I said, think the ad is more about attracting girls that have intelligence to try their hand at science with the hope that they would find their niche in their formative years when they are being bombarded with trash.

If you can't beat them, you might as well join them...at least we will have toilet cleaners that stick to the bowl that are invented by hot chicks..and along the way we might get a one in a million female Eienstein
:f

As far as I am concerned there is no harm in the ad because most dumb girls wouldn't survive year 12 physics and maths let alone uni, but it if encourages the 'hiding' to explore then it is all good...but I don't expect an increase in female scientists except in the area of environmental science because environmental science is not about discovery, it is about getting funding to stop the status quo and progress which is quite easy to prove via some unheard of frog, fly or gecko.

I agree with IQ. Nothing says glamour like being a librarian, accountant or secretary.

I think that glamour would be the last thing on the minds of those women who want to pursue science as a career

Those type of ads are usually aimed at males. To what end, in this case, I don't know

Got it in one.

"Chicks dig brainiacs... do science, get chicks!"
"But you will run your fluffy bunny mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."
