Annual backbencher salary will rise from $141k to $185k

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard's salary will rise to $481,000 and backbenchers will get a base rate of $185,000 from 2012, under a plan released today.
The Remuneration Tribunal has released its final determination of politicians' and public servant pay, which needs the parliament's approval before it comes into effect.
Tribunal president John Conde said in Sydney the prime minister's new salary would be $481,000 - up from $367,000

And this applies to the coalition also..including Abbott, and Bob Brown.

I wonder what Bill Shortens wage is, now with his new portfolio having arrived (He was not long sworn in) just in time for pay-day.

It really is quite disgusting isn't it.
If Gillard had cost of living expenses then perhaps you could justify a CPI increase, but no Gillard has no cost of living expenses as everything is paid for by the taxpayers, everything!
Or if Gillad had a performance based wage then she'd be only paid a nominal $1 per week perhaps year would be much more appropriate.

so why was any increase given.

Oh that's right the "independant" Board of Review (that Gillard appointed) chose to do so!

It really is disgraceful, did we expect anything less from this dysfunctional government?

Wages were set by an independent tribunal. Allowances were cut at the same time.

Do you know how much work backbenchers do? Do you get a phone call on Christmass Eve and have to leave family to go arrange emergency accommodation for a family suddenly evicted? I have been at MPs’ houses when this has happened, then there is the time away from family when Parlt sits and when MP has to attend a committee meeting or is doorknocking etc etc?

To go to the particular, Gillard was a partner at her law firm before she turned 30. If she had stayed there she, and Roxon and some of the other top lawyers in Labor and Liberal etc ranks would be on pay where $400K is small cheese.

If you want to whinge about pollies feeding at the trough Howard cost us close to $25m minimum by choosing to stay at Kirribily House so his social climbing wife could entertain there. Howard is still costing us at least $1m a year for office and travel and for what?

Noones complaining about real pollies wage increases, just Gillard the bludgers!

Why are we increasing hers and her cabinet ministers wages when all she does is delegate work to "committees" to sit-on indefinitely, this and get paid for doing so?

Did we really need a school-funding review panel... then again, it's Garrett were talking about here, so perhaps we did.

But must we pay for the privaleg twice, when we should be paying one person to do the job they were assigned to do.

Garrett must have some dirt on Gillard, or else she'd let him go if he'd accept his own redundancy.

Garret threatened to quit politics which would have forced a bi-election.
Gillard and the indies can't afford a bi-election.

Actually, The Remuneration Tribunal consists of three part-time members appointed by the Governor-General.. aka the ALP (In this case) given it's our GG's son in law (Bill Shorten) who calls the shots and is preparing himself for the ALP leadership.

How can he sleep while his conscience is burning - re Gillards uranium deal.

The time has come al right... time for Garret to do what's fair.
