make a problem from a solution
PM's lost control: Abbott
TONY Abbott has moved to capitalise on revelations that some of the 107 asylum-seekers being held "in limbo" on Christmas Island, and others who land before Australia seals a deal with Malaysia to take 800 boatpeople who arrive on our shores, will be settled here.
The Opposition Leader said yesterday the government had "lost control of our borders" .
"John Howard found a problem and created a solution. Julia Gillard found a solution and created a problem, and every time she tries to address it she just makes a bad situation worse," Mr Abbott said.
He said the news that Malaysia would not take boatpeople until the deal was finalised was "typical of Prime Minister Gillard. That in a panic she went out and announced something that wasn't a done deal. It's typical of a government which is all announcement and no delivery."

Not sure he found a solution. Push factors are more important in why these people come than pull factors.

Why doesn't it make sense that they are being held on Christmas island until the place to process them has been agreed and arranged? Sounds like commonsense to me. I note you didn't link the articles from the papers showing people deciding to stay at refugee camps in Indonesia instead of travel to Australia via smuggler's boats?
Re: make a problem from a solution
The “Pacific Solution” was a $1.2Bn accounting trick. Just as many refugees arrived on our shores as before. We can do without huge waste like this.

howards solution was effective.
we had 0 - 6 boats a year arriving here.
even the UN is against gillard on this one.
as well as us getting 4000 of mayalsias worst, the UN are against it.

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-na ... 1f18u.htmlThe United Nations high commissioner for human rights has slammed the Australian government's asylum seeker deal with Malaysia as illegal.
Navi Pillay, who is to meet with Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Canberra on Tuesday, has told a forum in Sydney that asylum seekers are not adequately protected in Malaysia.
"If Australia is serious ... about sending 800 people out to Malaysia then I think it violates refugee law," she said.
"It cannot send individuals to a country that has not ratified the torture convention, the convention on refugees."
Ms Gillard wants to send 800 asylum seekers who try to come to Australia by boat to Malaysia for processing.
In exchange, Australia will resettle 4000 genuine refugees currently residing in Malaysia.
Ms Pillay said Australia's asylum seeker processing policy should be legal and made more efficient.
"The first option should not be how best to turn away people, the first option should be how to receive people."
Human Rights Law Centre executive director Phil Lynch called on Labor to walk away from the deal, which hasn't been officially signed yet by both nations.
"Australia's obligation is to provide protection to those people who lawfully seek asylum under the refugees convention," Mr Lynch told ABC Radio.
"That is Australia's international obligation, it is our moral obligation, it is our human obligation."

I say that you have to rule out what I heard described as push factors (i.e reasons that people leave their home country) to say that howards solution worked.

cruntcyclist is easily fooled.
The boats came, the refugees were assessed and the normal number made it to Australia. Only difference was the boats landed at bit of Australia “excised” from the Australian Immigration Zone.

I also remember seeing a study which showed that the fluctuations in refugee numbers were based on those push factors, not what made them go to a certain country.

Re: make a problem from a solution
Yeah, roughly so—we take such a tiny % of all refugees you can’t expect strong correlation but there definitely is some correlation. After the PS was introduced there was a tiny dip in numbers arriving in Australia—delay in processing due to setting up the PS—but that got caught up with and from then the numbers followed the same pattern again. Somewhere here I argued the case against another braindead fanboi and posted a link to a UNHCR report that showed all this.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/nationa ... 6061471003AUSTRALIA is locked into settling 4000 extra refugees as part of its swap with Malaysia even if none of the 800 asylum-seekers flagged to be sent to Malaysia in return are deported.
As the Gillard government came under renewed fire yesterday over the terms of its refugee swap with Kuala Lumpur, Immigration Department secretary Andrew Metcalfe admitted to a Senate committee that no asylum-seeker needed to be sent to Malaysia under the terms of the deal.
"(But) Australia will still resettle all 4000 humanitarian refugees even if no asylum-seekers are sent," he told a Senate estimates committee hearing.........
