It was staggering to see Gillard telling lies about her lie.

Even after being confronted with the video of herself stating before the election that there would be no carbon tax under her government, she continued to lie about it! Fucking astounding and it shows how little regard the bitch has for us all.

Anyone who lies to your face is a piece of shit. And when they lie about their lies, they are showing that they think you are a piece of shit.

Why not give tax breaks to help create non carbon intensive energy solutions, just trying to impose a cost on energy we have not choice but to use now is not really going to win many votes.

I am glad she changed her mind. I was really disappointed when she ruled out carbon taxes before the election. I wrote to Labor and explained to them that carbon taxes were the most sensible policy from an economic perspective. I guess a lot of people must have been telling them the same thing, because the message finally got through.

Unfortunately Gillard should have come clean immediately with an explanation as to why she backflipped. The truth would have alleviated some of this pseudo hysteria from the opposition. Labor have always been hopeless liars whereas the Liberals have been far more skilled at obfuscating the truth - ie the illegal invasion of Iraq, AWB scandal etc. The only difference between a good liar and a bad one is that the bad liar gets caught out sooner.

It seems that lies are all we can expect from our politicans - Bob Brown being the exception. The tax was inevitable and we knew it, although the opposition are pretending this is a surprise. One of the reasons they lost the last election was because of their refusal to make any attempt whatsoever in reducing emissions.

Bob Brown has always pushed for a price on pollution and said so. There have been no lies from the Greens and whether you like it or not - a carbon tax is the only way to reduce our emissions and gradually phase out fossil fuels. It's not about today - it's about tomorrow and it has been a long time since we've had any government plan for the future.

We have a developing country such as China becoming leaders in renewables - so what happens when they don't need our coal anymore?

A carbon price is all about making Australia competitive for the future. We generated an estimated 537 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2009, the largest amount per person of any developed country, 75% of which came from the energy sector.

We have to modernise Australia - and coal will not be able to compete with renewables in a few decades.

If the Greens are finally pulling a few strings - good on them. It's about time they wised up to the deviousness of politics.

Carbon taxes are supported by most economists because they are the most economically rational way of reducing greenhouse emissions. They will do less harm to the economy than any of the other proposals put forward. If you are going to accuse someone of economic vandalism, at least make an effort to understand the economics.
