Just read the comments there, heartbreaking! A woman concerned for her ex rings him and convinces him to go to an evacuation centre, someone worried about his sugar cane growing father living on-site in a caravan.
This is going to be terrible!

Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi was upgraded to category five this morning as the weather bureau warned it was likely to be "more life-threatening" than any storm seen in Australia in living memory.
Tens of thousands of people are fleeing their homes ahead of the monster storm, which is expected to hit the coast between Cairns and Innisfail with winds of up to 295 kilometres per hour near the core.
It's very scary. Let's hope it isn't as bad as predicted. Cyclones can change direction fortunately. Cairns is such a pretty place. My son lived there for a couple of years until recently and I was always worried that something like this would happen, although I think they've got cyclone bunkers in the hotels which should give some protection to those residents who've decided to stay.
Those not fleeing are either courageous or stupid.

No, I think it is political. While a TC is a natural event we are talking about its impact on people.

One thing TC Yasi will do is kill opposition the the flood levy.
Those that know were supporting the levy before that anyway:
Moody's counters opposition to Prime Minister's Queensland flood levy
AUSTRALIA'S planned new flood levy is sound fiscal policy, a senior analyst at Moody's Investors Service said today, flying in the face of a barrage of criticism for the measure from opponents who say it is an unnecessary burden on taxpayers.
The comments by Steven Hess, a New York-based senior credit officer in Moody's sovereign risk group, runs counter to a storm of opposition to the government's $1.8 billion tax designed to offset reconstruction costs after flooding wrecked swathes of Queensland.
The state of Queensland makes up some 20 per cent of Australia's $1.3 trillion economy and supplies close to two-thirds of the seaborne trade in the high-grade coking coal used for steelmaking, and the floods have already punched a $5.6bn hole in the federal budget.
The federal government is responsible for 75 per cent of reconstruction costs and it estimates the floods will knock half a percentage point off growth this fiscal year, ending June 30. Unofficial estimates peg total rebuilding costs alone at $20bn, before the loss to government revenues from lower mining royalties is factored in.

And that is from the OO!

Some good DOES come out of WA! Tony Crook to support the flood levy—a bellwether move I think.
