The French knew full well their deal was precarious and they'd been informed many times. All they did was blow out the cost by billions of dollars and push back the date we would receive these inferior subs. They have no-one to blame but themselves.

Forget those diesel powered Frankenstein subs.
The French offered us nuclear subs and we wanted old design diesel subs from WW1.

I think we should have renegotiated a new deal with the French to supply say 3 nuclear subs
as fast as possible and still made the deal to get subs from the Poms or Yanks in 20 years time
(which is what ScoMo opted for.)
We can't wait 20 years for the AUKUS subs - it's too long.
We'll be all speaking Chinese by then.
Bobby, AUKUS is much bigger than just the subs. Intelligence sharing, AI tech, hypersonic etc etc etc.

We'll get subs if we need them in a hurry from AUKUS. We were going to wait a lot longer for the crappy French subs and even though they hadn't even started work on them the price kept going up and up and up. Stuff the Frogs.

We're a strategic asset to the US and the UK. We are nothing to France.

I know but how much of that was what we would have got anyway?

We needed nuclear subs 10 years ago.
Any nuclear subs would have done well - even French ones.
China is on our doorstep looking with greedy eyes at all the mineral wealth.

We can't know. If circumstances dictate we need subs tomorrow, the US will fill our capability gap. Can the French do that?

Remember, we also fought the French in WWII. I don't trust them.

Where do you think all the American subs spend their time these days?

Here's another bit of comforting info.
France has a fleet of 10 subs. US has 68.
If things turn hot with China and we need to call on the country who were's buying subs off to fill our capability gap ASAP, who would you prefer?
