If Aus had 330 million people divided up into 50 states it might make more sense. Nominees campaign in the states they want to win over with promises etc and if those promises are not kept they get voted out.

Here we just get all lumped together and none of the promises are kept anyway from either side. We also have a preferential system where most people have no clue where their actual vote goes anyway.

I don't think our system is any better. It's just different.
Well, the major difference is of course that they are a Republic and we are a Parliamentary democracy. We are "not all lumped in together". We are divided up into parliamentary seats on the basis of population. It who wins the greatest number of seats who forms government. Your inability to apparently understand that simply indicates that you "have no clue where your actual vote counts." Preferences only count in your own seat. It ensures that the most popular candidate wins the seat.

In America, they have a simplistic "first-past-the-post" counting system (which basically only works when there are two candidates. It is quite possible if there are three or more candidates for the least popular candidate to win the election). On top of that they have the electoral college system. The popular vote in the US determines where the votes go in the Electoral College. It is though, the Electoral College who determines who is el Presidente', not the popular vote.

What is even worse is that they don't have an independent electoral commission to run their elections. Votes are collected in different ways in different states/districts/"parishes". The result is, as we saw in the 2000 election a mix up of massive proportions which can and has been exploited to bar citizens from registering their votes if they are black/Asian/Native American.

Basically, it is impossible to compare the two voting systems. Australia's is well organised and well run, the US one is a shambles. :roll

I believe the US is a democratic/constitutional republic and not a republic and I am fully aware how both systems work.

Didn't get past your second patronising line sorry.

Yet their politicians continually claim it is a "democracy". It is obviously not.

Your loss, Black Orchid. :rofl

............ Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz filed an ethics complaint against Nancy Pelosi that said the House Speaker possibly violated numerous House rules — and maybe even broke the law — by tearing up a copy of President Trump’s State of the Union speech.

The Florida legislator sent a letter to the House Committee on Ethics requesting they open an investigation and shared the missive on Twitter.

Gaetz wrote that “Speaker Pelosi’s gesture was deeply offensive and appears to violate clauses 1 and 2 of House Rule XXIII,” which dictate the House’s official code of conduct.

“Her behaviour does not ‘reflect creditably on the House,’ nor does it follow “the spirit and the letter of the Rules of the House.”

Gaetz, in his letter, said Pelosi’s “unseemly behaviour certainly warrants censure.”

The lawmaker asked that after conducting the ethics probe, the committee make referrals to the Department of Justice “for further investigation and prosecution.”

Pelosi, Gaetz alleges in the letter, “appears to be in violation” of a law that prohibits willfully destroying paper or documents “filed or deposited” in public office.

“There is no question that Speaker Pelosi ‘mutilated, obliterated, or destroyed’ the copy of the President’s address provided to her at the beginning of the evening,” Gaetz wrote, quoting language from the law. .............

The assumption is that this is the copy of el Presidente' speech which was lodged officially with the Congressional office. Why? Just more mud being thrown at Pelosi. Tsk, tsk, :roll :roll

Who cares, Brian? This is why I can never take you seriously. You are a progressive partisan hack with absolutely no balance and no give.

She's Speaker of the House and 3rd inline for the Presidency for God's sake and she acts like a bitter and twisted little delinquent. She embarrassed herself and her party and will probably banish them to the wilderness for years to come. If she cannot hold her position with dignity she has no right to hold it at all. The GOP Speaker introducing Clinton for the SOTU address when he was impeached acted with dignity and aplomb.

Not being able to criticise your own when they behave badly says a lot about you progressives. If it had been McConnell doing that to Pelosi I would have condemned him. If it was Morrison doing that to Albanese I would condemn that too. Why? Because it's the moral thing to do.

That is your opinion, Black Orchid and as we know, you're not an American citizen. In reality, she was frustrated by el Presidente' Trump's refusal to shake hands upon entering the chamber, which is a courtesy extended to the el Presidente' by the Speaker of the House. Yet you lot concentrate unduly on her reaction to him by tearing up his speech. Why aren't you attacking Trump for his refusal to shake her hand? It just goes by the wayside, it seems. Mmmm? :roll :roll

Pelosi isn't guilty of anything at the State of the Union Speech except showing her butt and making a fool of herself.

America is mostly referred to as a "democratic republic". We are a republic, our congress is democratically elected and the states elect the president based on democratic input from the citizens of each state.
