Bri the article doesnt EXPLAIN WHY CANBERRA AIR IS SO BAD..

I suggest its because there is little escape from our mountain range we have little valleys here
even morning fog is worse in some places than others..we are very lucky they stopped smoke coming from chimneys
here years ago other wise we would be choking for sure..... we get promised rain all the time it never arrives it seems to circle us.

the only thing we get are dust storms...not sure why just lucky I guess....we lost an awful lot of gum trees in 2003...maybe that
saved us this time round.. not that its over yet.....I am trying not to whinge over some smoke but my daughter who had to leave her home in 2003 is having the odd panic attack....

we are also protected from very high wind......maybe red doesnt agree with me but I havent changed on that since moving here in the 80s

That wasn't the question they were answering, Cods.

Canberra is downwind from fires - doesn't matter which way the wind is blowing, there is apparently a fire upwind, no matter what the direction it is blowing. This is also affecting Sydney. The result is a near continuous layer of cloud which blows over Canberra.

More than 180 alleged arsonists have been arrested since the start of the bushfire season, with 29 blazes deliberately lit in the Shoalhaven region of southeast NSW in just three months.

The Shoalhaven fires were lit between July and September last year, with Kempsey recording 27 deliberately lit fires, NSW Bureau of Crime and Statistics and Research data shows.

Police arrested 183 people for lighting bushfires across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania in the past few months. NSW police data shows 183 people have been charged or cautioned for bushfire-related offences since November 8, and 24 arrested for deliberately starting bushfires.

Queensland police say 101 people have been picked up for setting fires in the bush, 32 adults and 69 juveniles.

In Tasmania, where fires have sprung up in the north of the state and outside Hobart, five were caught setting fire to vegetation. Victoria reported 43 charged for 2019.

As former State Fire Chiefs call for a summit on bushfires, expert and scientist David Packham explains that it has nothing to do with climate change and everything to do with fuel-loads.

So they have arrested 183 people and not released their identities?

Perhaps they fear reprisals from those who lost friends or properties?
They are only accused at this stage.

And why are the fuel loads so high.......Drought....

Bigger and worse droughts can be linked to climate change !
