A tiny koala severely injured in the devastating NSW bushfires will live to climb another eucalyptus tree thanks to the tireless work of volunteer animal rescuers.
Flash nearly died from his burns sustained in the blaze at Taree on the mid-north coast and was so unwell he had to be sedated to undergo treatment.
But due to the care he is receiving at Port Stephens Koala's he is on the road to recovery.

Bear was dumped at the pound by his owners and was rescued and trained to be a Koala detection dog by the University of SC ...

Bear is no standard koala-detecting hound, however. He is now the only dog in the country which can track down a koala based not only the smell of its faeces, but also the smell of its fur.

Koala hospital's GoFundMe campaign raises more than $1m in wake of bushfire devastation.

An online fundraising campaign set up by a New South Wales koala hospital has raised more than $1 million to rescue and rehabilitate marsupials devastated by bushfires.

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital's Help Thirsty Koalas Devastated by Recent Fires campaign had by Thursday night raised $1,078,000 on GoFundMe, eclipsing the initial stated target of $25,000.

According to a message on the campaign's fundraising page, the size of the donations had led to the hospital extending the project beyond setting up automatic drinking stations in areas affected by bushfires.

With the number of new drinking stations increased, and a water carrying vehicle to replenish the drinking stations, the campaign announced it would use the excess funds to establish a wild koala breeding program.

"Some of the funds raised through the GoFundMe site will be directed to building a Koala Ark — a facility to allow the surviving koalas to be accommodated in a healthy habitat area," a message on the campaign's GoFundMe page read.

The campaign says 31 koalas have been brought to the hospital from affected areas since the bushfires began last month.

As many as 350 koalas were believed to have died during recent bushfires in the area, and the campaign said 75 per cent of the areas in the region hit by fire were prime koala habitat.

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital normally treats between 200 and 250 koalas each year.

Koala hospital volunteer Lyn Booth told the ABC earlier this month that koalas under the hospital's care would need to stay longer than usual.

"We expect to have the koalas in here for up to 12 months because they won't be able to be released into their habitat because it's non-existent," she said.

"So we've got to wait for that bush to regenerate so that they can be put back out there."

Ms Booth said most of the animals in the bushfire zones had suffered dehydration, not only from habitat loss in the fires but from the drought, which had left little water in the leaves the koalas ate.

The hospital rehydrates koalas and then examines them for burns, which are treated with burn cream before being bandaged.

Workers change the dressings every three days.

The fundraising campaign is believed to be one of the most successful Australian GoFundMe campaigns, but its donations total so far is still well short of the country's highest.

Well done!! I hope they find more survivors. They have only found less than a tenth of this particular colony as yet to say nothing of the other colonies around the country where fires are raging.

Incredible scenes emerged from the Green Wattle Creek fire, which exploded out of the bush and roared up to engulf towering trees within seconds on Thursday evening.

He said a lone fire truck held at the scene as long as possible before the ferocity of the flames forced the firefighters to retreat.

3 out of control fires have now merged outside Sydney. There will be nothing left by Christmas. I am devastated for all the poor animals who have no hope in hell of escaping.

Have they announced just how all these fires were started? If some have been deliberately lit, they should catch those responsible and punish them severely!

I haven't heard how they've started I think every available hand is busy trying to put them out.

I took a pic of the sun but it didn't turn out very well. It's big and red. Bright bright RED and there is ash falling everywhere.

The sky was RED in Canberra in 2003 when we had those bushfires. Scary. Stay indoors, especially if you have Asthma or COPD. Some of the smoke has been blown this way ... I don't need that!
