Why are there constantly shortages of doctors? Surely it has always been an attractive profession to enter, and highly paid with a high level of respect. Yet we never seem to have enough, ever.

They do it for the money. How do you like seating in a room, the same room every day listening to other people telling you about their prostate, liver, lungs, fishbones stuck in the throat, bad breath and their piles? Day in day out? for the rest of your life!
Not a pleasant experience is it?
I think we need a medical examination, are the doctors. dentists and all the other medical specialist over payed? Fair enough they go through a lot of study and all that, but what about their social responsibility? What good are doctors with a lot of qualifications when the majority can not afford them? It looks to me that some sections of our community are above every one else at a time of a GFC.Lawyers are in the same boat.At a time when workers have to take a pay cut to keep their jobs, why don't doctors and others volunteer to do the same even for just a period of time, until we get back to normal? If they are proud of our country, there is a way they can prove it.Would you buy a used car from a doctor?

Because there is a shortage of training places at uni.

The number of training places at uni (for commonwealth-supported places) is capped by the commonwealth govt (which is why the states always bashed Howard when they starting having a shortage of doctors).

Now, even if there were enough places at uni, there are not enough clinical placements in hospitals for the medical students to gain the necessary clinical experience to be deemed competent enough clinically to graduate.

So, not enough doctors in the pipeline being trained, and loads of our current doctors (especially consultants) are older and nearing retirement, so we never top the bucket up.

Which is why we need to recruit overseas trained doctors to fill the gaps.

Rinse, and repeat.
