The US was not dependent on either Afghanistan or Iraq for oil. Indeed, there was no oil industry in Afghanistan. However, US Allies, particularly Japan and Europe were dependent on Iraqi Oil before Gulf War I. Washington's fear was that with the loss of that oil both regions/countries would find it difficult to fuel their economies and trade with the US, so there was a motive for ejecting Iraq from Kuwait and ensure the ongoing supply of oil.

In real life, the Oil was lost anyway because of sanctions. Europe and Japan were forced to turn to other sources - most notably Iran and Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, so the short fall was made up anyway. Then there was the decision after Afghanistan to "finish things off in Iraq" and open the door for US Oil there. We all know how well that's turned out, don't we?
