Re: Betting on the election
https://www.smh.com.au/federal-election ... 51oy1.htmlSportsbet will lose at least $5.2 million thanks to its decision to pay out early on Bill Shorten winning Saturday's federal election as large bookmakers again had to admit they had misread the political landscape.
The betting company paid out on Mr Shorten becoming prime minister two days before Australians went to the polls, where voters surprisingly chose to re-elect Scott Morrison's Coalition government. Sportsbet said on Thursday Mr Shorten was at Winx-like odds of $1.16 to win.
"We paid out $1.3 million early to punters who backed Labor early, but on top of that we obviously have a massive payout on the Coalition which will be at least three times that figure," Sportsbet spokesman Richard Hummerston told The Age and SMH.
"Seventy per cent of the cash staked before the early payout had come for Labor, our punters had called the election early. We thought we’d simply give them their cash early."

I read somewhere that they reckon it was Alex Turnbull who made the $850,000 bet.

Re: Betting on the election
I sometimes think that these statements about massive payouts by bookies are just bullshit.
You know the old saying any type of publicity is good publicity.
They were saying the same thing about massive bets on Winx...
"We paid out 1.3 million on Labor"...arent we terrific to bet with....
I contacted Sportsbet to enquire about getting a bet on Labor after they told us they
had paid out early....just to take the piss.... I was told that all bets on Labor were paid out if they were made
before a certain cutoff time, which had past...
I suggested if I put a bet on now, will you pay me out now.
The answer was no, youll have to wait until the election is decided.
Why..
Arent you paying out early....
Only up to the cut off time.....
I love to take the piss out of bookies...
Theyre gutless lying cheats....always have been..always will be...
And yes I know I cancelled my bet on the Coalition...got my money back...
No big deal..it was only a small bet....so this post is not sour grapes...
