Manus Island Detention Centre

Post by Neferti » Thu Apr 28, 2016 4:58 pm

Perhaps, the Wentworth Waffler has realised he has to stick to Liberal Party policies.
Malcolm Turnbull has delivered his strongest comments yet in the wake of the Manus Island court ruling, saying detainees will not be resettled in Australia and warning against being "misty-eyed" about the policy.
Key points:

Prime Minister says Government needed to be "clear and determined in our national purpose"
Peter Dutton says Australia "had discussions with Nauru"
Labor says Coalition should negotiate with PNG about changing laws

The Prime Minister made the comments amid ongoing speculation about the future of about 850 detainees at Manus Island detention centre, which the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court ruled as illegal earlier this week.

PNG's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill intends to close the centre and Mr Turnbull has emphatically ruled out any of the men coming to Australia.

"They will not come to Australia — that is absolutely clear and the PNG Government knows that," he said.

Back to Nauru
And its time we built proper facilities to house these offshore detainees.

In one breath PNG are telling us to get out and in the next breath they want to be paid off over time because their economy relies on our money and they don't want it to stop. How can we afford to pay for 2 facilities in different countries? We should have stuck with Nauru and not diverted to Manus. The costs for this policy are crippling.

I acknowledge it was a Rudd incentive just before he lost office. I didn't think it was a good idea at the time especially as it was costing us more than half a billion dollars. Our politicians don't give a stuff about the cost of these on the run policies as long as they can score some points.

Really?

In August 2012, the Gillard Labor government introduced a policy, reopening Nauru detention centre and Manus Island detention centre for offshore processing, and on 19 July 2013, newly returned Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced, "asylum seekers who come here by boat without a visa will never be settled in Australia", striking a Regional Resettlement Arrangement between Australia and Papua New Guinea, Manus opened the same day it was announced. It's purpose was to divert all "unauthorised maritime arrivals" to mandatory detention on Manus Island with no possibility of attaining Australian residency. Not just an incentive mantra.... :du

Perhaps you'd like to actually blame the ALP and the proper people for their policies then, like I originally asked.

Rudd, Gillard or the ALP? What's the difference? They all sat under the one umbrella.

Come on mantra just say it... Manus was an ALP policy and opened whilst they were in power by Kevin Rudd... come on it won't hurt you too much and its something you cant blame Abbott or Howard for. :beer
Well YOU can, but you'd be wrong yet again.

Thanks for reminding me that Howard can be blamed for the original policy of sending asylum seekers to Manus Island. The ALP were only being copycats. So who do we point the finger at? The instigator or the copycats?

On 28 October 2001, at his 2001 election campaign policy launch, Prime Minister John Howard said "We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come"[12] in an effort to build support for the policy.

Asylum seekers were intercepted at sea while sailing from Indonesia and moved using Australian naval vessels. Detention centres were set up on Christmas Island, Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, and on the island nation of Nauru.

Oh dear you are a howard hater through and through aren't you just cant help yourself you sad pathetic obsessive git.

The detention centre was set up as a processing centre and within 2 years only one detainee remained... eventually he came to Australia, the ALP first opened the floodgates again, and eventually Manus was reopened, very unlike the LIB policy. Hope you choke on your childish bias mantra.
