I have applied one of his (I think his) simple ideas. If it is simple, it is probably right.

The way we view space is now changed. Blackholes have been proved to exist.

Esteemed physicist Stephen Hawking has celebrated the discovery of gravitational waves, calling it a “groundbreaking” find.

After 100 years of searching, an international team of scientists has confirmed the existence of Einstein’s gravitational waves, making it one of the biggest astrophysical discoveries in the past century.

The Professor told the BBC’s Pallab Ghosh the breakthrough corresponded with theories he constructed 40 years ago at Cambridge University.

“The observed properties of this system is consistent with predictions about black holes that I made in 1970 here in Cambridge. The area of the final black hole is greater than the sum of the areas of the initial black holes as predicted by my black hole area theorem.”

Hawking, who congratulated the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) team of scientists, added that

“Gravitational waves provide a completely new way of looking at the universe. The ability to detect them has the potential to revolutionise astronomy.

“The discovery is the first detection of a black hole binary system and the first observation of black holes merging.

“Apart from testing general relativity, we could hope to see black holes throughout the history of the universe. We may even see relics of the very early universe during the big bang at the most extreme energies possible.”

Gravitational waves are a measure of strain in space, an effect of the motion of large masses that stretches the fabric of space-time - a way of viewing space and time as a single, interweaved continuum.

They travel at the speed of light and cannot be stopped or blocked by anything.

Einstein said space-time could be compared to a net, bowing under the weight of an object. Gravitational waves would be like ripples that emanate from a pebble thrown in a pond.

While scientists have previously been able to calculate gravitational waves, they had never before seen one directly.

In his time, some of these predictions were verified further validating his theory.

In the last 100 years many of his predictions and further predictions built on his theory (like Hawking's Blackholes) through observations.

So his thought was verifiable as technology progressed and others built on the shoulders of this intellectual giant.

Believing without a foundation is just guess work and has a high risk of never being verified. I believe in pink unicorns. They are magical and leave no trace of there existence, have never been seen in a verifiable way but I have faith they help me in my everyday interactions and protect me from the dark forces.
