Perhaps we need a few insane people for when the world goes mad and they will be making sense?

Or in the case of lefty environmentalism, the banning of DDT, one of the most effect malaria deterrents and resulted in the avoidable deaths of tens of thousands, at least.I guess it has, historically, lead to innovation.
